Getting to know Dr. Julie Pham

I am a Vietnamese-speaking psychiatrist dedicated to providing compassionate, individualized, and culturally sensitive mental health care. I believe effective psychiatric treatment begins with understanding each patient as a whole person—not only their symptoms, but also their experiences, relationships, cultural background, and personal goals. I earned my medical degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine and completed psychiatry residency training at Charles R. Drew University-UCLA and Oklahoma State University. My training has provided broad experience across outpatient and inpatient psychiatry, psychiatric emergency and consultation services, child and adolescent psychiatry, and veterans' mental health, including clinical experiences at Harbor-UCLA, UCLA Resnick, Long Beach VA, and OSU Behavioral Medicine. I have also worked with underserved patients with serious mental health conditions. My approach is collaborative and nonjudgmental. I want my patients to feel heard and comfortable discussing their concerns openly. I take time to explain diagnoses and treatment options, including the potential benefits and risks of medications, so that we can make treatment decisions together. As a Vietnamese-speaking psychiatrist, I especially welcome Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American patients who may prefer discussing their mental health in Vietnamese or who value having their cultural experiences understood as part of their care.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that good psychiatric care starts with listening and understanding you as a whole person, not simply treating a list of symptoms. During our visits, I will take the time to understand your concerns, life experiences, cultural background, and goals for treatment. We will work together to develop an individualized treatment plan and discuss the potential benefits and risks of different treatment options so that you can make informed decisions about your care. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and nonjudgmental. I want you to feel comfortable asking questions and discussing concerns openly, including topics that may be difficult to talk about. I also speak Vietnamese and welcome patients who feel more comfortable communicating in Vietnamese or who value having their cultural background considered as part of their care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first appointment, you will receive a call from my office, Lifewave Psychiatry, to complete a brief screening, review your insurance information, and answer some basic questions. Once this process is completed, your appointment will be confirmed. Your initial psychiatric evaluation is typically about 60 minutes. During this visit, I will take time to understand your symptoms, medical and psychiatric history, current concerns, and treatment goals. Depending on the complexity of your situation and the information available, additional appointments or records may be needed before medications are prescribed. My goal is to conduct a thoughtful and thorough evaluation so that we can develop a treatment plan that is appropriate for your individual needs.
