Getting to know Katja Austin

As a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in mental health, I am passionate about helping individuals navigate life’s challenges with compassion, expertise, and evidence-based care. My clinical background spans both primary care and psychiatry, giving me a well-rounded understanding of how physical and mental health intersect. I provide psychiatric evaluations and medication management for a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, PTSD, and substance use disorders. I believe every patient’s story is unique, and I take the time to listen and build a therapeutic relationship rooted in trust, respect, and collaboration. My approach is patient-centered and holistic. I aim to create a safe, nonjudgmental environment where individuals feel heard and supported. Whether someone is seeking help for the first time or continuing their mental health journey, I strive to meet them where they are and work together on personalized treatment goals. I have a strong passion for addiction treatment and recovery support, and I am committed to reducing stigma and promoting long-term healing. I often work with patients through various stages of recovery, helping them develop coping skills, manage medications effectively, and build healthier, more fulfilling lives. Mental health is health—and it’s never too early or too late to seek support. I’m here to walk alongside you with care, clinical insight, and hope for what’s ahead. Let me know if you'd like to add her name, specific therapies or age groups she works with, or make the tone more casual or clinical.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting mental health treatment can feel overwhelming, but I strive to make the process as comfortable and empowering as possible. As your provider, my priority is creating a safe, supportive space where you can show up exactly as you are—without fear of judgment. You can expect me to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and collaborate with you on a treatment plan that aligns with your goals and values. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, I tailor care to each person’s unique history, preferences, and needs. I welcome open, honest communication. Whether you’re new to psychiatric care or have years of experience, I’ll meet you where you are and guide you at a pace that feels right for you. I value shared decision-making and want you to feel informed and confident about the path we’re taking together. Medication can be a helpful tool—but it’s only one part of the picture. I often integrate lifestyle strategies, therapy referrals, and wellness education into treatment, and I’m always open to exploring what works best for you. Above all, I want you to know that you’re not alone. I’m here to support your healing, growth, and resilience—every step of the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is collaborative, thorough, and rooted in compassion. During our first session, I’ll take time to get to know you—your history, current concerns, and what you hope to achieve through treatment. We’ll discuss your mental health symptoms, physical health, lifestyle, and any past experiences with therapy or medications. This initial evaluation usually lasts around 60 minutes and helps me form a clear picture of how best to support you. Based on this assessment, I’ll share diagnostic impressions and walk you through personalized treatment options. If medication is appropriate, I’ll explain how it works, what to expect, and how we’ll monitor progress together. I value shared decision-making and want you to feel informed, involved, and empowered throughout the process. Follow-up sessions are typically 20–30 minutes and focus on how you’re feeling, how the treatment is working, and any adjustments we may need to make. I’ll also check in on lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, relationships, and substance use, as these often play a key role in mental health. While I do not provide formal talk therapy, I incorporate supportive, therapeutic conversation into every session. I may also refer you to a trusted therapist if deeper, ongoing therapy is needed. Ultimately, my goal is to create a steady, supportive space where you feel seen, heard, and cared for—as we work together toward lasting wellness.
