Getting to know Dr. Kaycia Vansickle
Dr. Vansickle is a board-certified adult psychiatrist, who has been in practice for over 25 years. At the heart of Dr. Vansickle's clinical approach is a strong emphasis on establishing trust and building a therapeutic relationship to help patients achieve their goals.
Dr. Vansickle's practice focuses on medication management. Typically, she offers this in conjunction with supportive or emotionally focused therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. Occasionally Dr. Vansickle may believe that additional therapy is also needed and ask that you bring a therapist into your care team to provide the best outcome.
She received her medical degree from University of Texas Health Sciences Center San Antonio and went on to complete her internship at UAB, and residency in psychiatry from the University of Louisville Hospital, where she was chief resident, and the recipient of a national award in community psychiatry.
Dr. Vansickle then transitioned to working at both inpatient and outpatient practice as a Staff Psychiatrist primarily with facilities in Texas and Alabama for most of her career.
She has had experience in clinics affiliated with the VAMC and community mental health centers in Alabama, as well as with hospital-based clinics in Alabama, Kentucky, and Texas. She has treated seriously mentally ill patients on inpatient units and has performed psychiatric consultations to medically ill inpatients. She has experience with guardianship and competency evaluations, as well. She has supervised medical students, residents, and Nurse Practitioner practicum students.

Most patients pay a small copay per visit, subject to any deductible or coinsurance that your health plan has. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines appropriate billing guidelines. These guidelines depend on the length of the visit and the complexity and severity of your diagnosis. For this reason, we need to wait until after the visit for the final determination. We then submit the claim to your insurance company. The charges are calculated based upon pre-negotiated prices with your insurance company. Your insurance company will then determine what amount, if any, is your responsibility per your insurance plan.

I waited for the Dr to join my virtual visit for over almost an hour. When I called the phone number for customer service I was told the Dr would not respond to their attempts to contact her. Thankfully the my were able to reschedule my appointment for the same day later on and the Dr had the nerve to tell me that she was waiting on ME to join the video appointment and I never showed up. Rather than focusing on my reason to the visit the Dr felt the need to make me feel bad I wasted her time when my time was ALSO wasted waiting on her. Once we finally got to talking I felt all of her responses were very cold and she was just going through the motions rather than making me feel comfortable and giving me a safe space to talk about my mental health concerns.

I was told that my case was complex and that I would be better off seeking help from a local provider. If you have a more complex case, the providers on Talkiatry are probably not for you because they cannot see you frequently or in the event of an emergency. The provider seemed like she was very knowledgable and capable. She showed compassion for my case but did seem to wish I remembered all of my previously tried medications better.

I wasn’t sure what to expect for my first consultation but she made it so easy to discuss issues I had been struggling with for a very long time.
