“Dr Karakomi is a persopnable, yet professional physician. While suturing my incision he noted that I was restless and initiated a conversation about our mutual sports interests. His bedside manner is excellent and made the excision of my basal cell melanoma much more bearable.”

About Dr. Kevin Karikomi

As a first-year medicine resident pursuing a career in hematology/oncology, I became fascinated with skin conditions that have internal involvement, especially those associated with life-threatening or severe diseases. One night while on call, I admitted a woman with scleroderma-her ?beaked? nose and bound-down skin marked her struggle for life. As I listened to her story, I was deeply moved by her suffering and dread while desperately managing her rapidly deteriorating condition. Days later, I was saddened to hear of her death from lung complications. During my first two months, I managed patients in the ICU and CCU. After an exhausting day, I recall telling my wife that I didn't think I could or wanted to continue in medicine as a specialty. With her support, I applied for a dermatology residency-not once, but three times. When Lyme disease was first described, I was a third-year medicine resident rotating in dermatology at Ohio State. I was excited to give a lecture on this new condition to the director, Dr. Lowney, and residents who were unaware of this tick-borne illness. Early recognition of the characteristic diagnostic rash is imperative so prompt treatment can prevent serious heart problems, joint issues, and neurologic complications. Unable to accept me for a position, Dr. Lowney wrote a letter of recommendation to his friend and colleague, Dr. Ken Hashimoto, who had recently become chairman of the Department of Dermatology at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan-just an hour from my hometown of Webberville. I was thrilled and hopeful that our mutual Japanese heritage might improve my chances. Dr. Hashimoto was an internationally known expert in pathology and electron microscopy. To bolster my application, I arranged an elective as an outside medicine resident a few months before graduating as an internist. I earned my Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.
