Getting to know Dr. Lance Middleton
I'm originally from rural southern Louisiana. I moved to California to study medicine at Stanford University and stayed in the Bay Area to complete my residency training in adult psychiatry at UCSF. I'm an expert in the management of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD. Creatives, academics, entrepreneurs, and fellow helping professionals have all benefitted extensively from my services.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I am pleased to offer cutting edge, evidence-based medication management online and in person. I do not offer longterm benzodiazepine prescriptions due to their significant health risks. My clinical style is direct, curious, and warm.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Treatment begins with an intake appointment which is 50 minutes long. We will characterize your present-day symptoms and exhaustively review your medical, psychiatric, and family history. We will arrive at a provisional diagnosis and treatment plan which can include lifestyle management, psychotherapy, and medication strategies to address your symptoms. Follow up appointments are 20-25 minutes long, focused on brief psychotherapy, lifestyle modification and medication management of your psychiatric symptoms.

Dr. Middleton is truly wonderful. I came to him in a really tough time, and he's been deeply involved and concerned about every aspect of my care. He even managed to squeeze me in for an emergency call when I was having a bad reaction to a new medication. He's nice, caring, and even has a great sense of humor. I highly recommend!

Dr. Middleton is excellent. He is very kind and understanding, which makes it easy to talk through everything. I also appreciate how technically knowledgeable he is about medications. He has a great way of explaining the less tangible details of how they affect the brain and body. He explains everything clearly and helps me manage my care effectively. Highly recommended.

Dr. Middleton is excellent. He is very knowledgeable, without being arrogant (which is a problem I've run into in the past with other providers). He listens to everything you say and is patient. I'd definitely recommend him to family and friends.

It was very nice to meet Dr. Middleton. He was on time for the appointment, listened intently to the concerns that I had, and asked appropriate questions. This was only my first appointment with him, but he seems to be interested in me as a patient and I look forward to working with him going forward.

I have been seeing Dr. Middleton for a few months now and what stands out to me is his thoughtfulness and kindness. I never have to remind Dr. Middleton about aspects of my history, as he’s able to draw on our past conversations. I also never feel judged because he practices a high standard of professionalism and empathy during our sessions. Dr. Middleton comes with my full endorsement.
