This was my first appointment at an optometrist. I didn't realize it was in the glasses shop outside of the main building of 1150 18th St NW. They had me pay up front and submit to my insurance for reimbursement which I wasn't prepared for. Lauren Stephens didn't see me; the person who did, didn't tell me her name. When I asked later if that was Dr. Stevens, I was told no, she was out that day. The person who saw me was very good, am I'm happy with the service, I just wish the process had been made a little more clear and transparent and I had a name and credentials of the person who saw me.

I met with an optometrist (January 2018) today. The office is a small mom and pop shop. Everyone was friendly. My exam was thoroughly explained to me so that I understood what was happening with my prescription. I would definitely recommend this place.

Lauren is fantastic and has a great demeanor. She explains everything and is very thorough. The shop owner, however, can be a little pushy and they are VERY expensive compared to other shops. I'll likely not return, despite liking Lauren.

I thought the doctor was pleasant and offered good tips on eye health in addition to the normal information about my exam. It felt a little rushed and I believe it was because they were running a bit behind. The wait was less than 15 minutes. I would go back for the annual exam but I do not think the prices are competitive for lenses/frames and will be purchasing those elsewhere.

Dr.Stephens seemed rushed all the time, and although seemed to have the knowledge and skills, did not seem to have the empathy towards the patient. I asked her about the in-depth analysis ophthalmologists do, but she did not seem to pay attention, and kept going with her assessment. I didn't like her demeanor and attitude at all and would not recommend her at any rate. Really bad experience.

This was the worst doctor's visit I've ever had. Not only did I have to wait more than 30 minutes as the receptionist struggled to process my insurance, but then I was charged for the wrong type of contact lenses. Thank goodness for that mistake, because I was refunded the money and decided to order my contacts elsewhere where the price was considerably less. I felt railroaded throughout the entire experience, and I felt Dr. Stephens had a very condescending bedside manner. My boyfriend came to this appointment with me and he was incensed by how they conducted their business. I will never, ever go back. It's not worth the stress.

I arrived to my appointment 10 minutes early and Dr. Stephens finally showed up to the office 10 minutes after my appointment time. 20 minutes, wasn't really THAT long to wait, but as soon as she arrived, she hastily threw her coat and purse down and grabbed my paperwork and notioned that I go back into the office. It felt like she was definitely rushing through the appointment. Then, she lectured me for at least 10 minutes on how to remove, clean and insert my contacts properly in my eyeballs (I have been wearing contacts for 15 years). The invoice at the end of the visit was far more than I anticipated, but even though I asked several times what to expect, they didn't give me a straight answer until it was time to swipe my card.

Very nice doctor who is clearly knowledgeable and doesn't mind explaining what's she's doing, why she's doing it. I really appreciated that she explained what she was measuring in when she would do the "which one is more clear 1 or 2" thing. I wish she would have offered to give me my glasses and contact lens prescription so I could order on my own in the future but maybe I will have to call back and ask for it.

I'm torn. Dr. Stephens is very knowledgeable, and I appreciated that she explained most steps of the eye exam in detail. She also recommended a contact brand with a higher moisture content, which ended up working out very well for me. However, her bedside manner left much to be desired. I found her to be curt and patronizing throughout the procedure. For most of the exam, her tone was a mixture between annoyance and condescension. For the sheer unpleasantness of the visit, I will not be returning.

Dr. Stephens was great. Mr. Khalil was a mess. Dr. Stephens was very professional, very knowledgeable, extremely helpful and informative. She took her work seriously. Mr. Khalil, however.... He was pushy about selling me lenses right away, he didn't give me my insurance card until I asked him for it, and I only found out later that I wasn't even given my prescription. I know now that's not in compliance with the FTC's "Contact Lens Rule" (16 CFR Part 315). When I called a few days later to ask about the script (I didn't mention the law, any good doctor should know it anyway, and threats don't help), I got a return voicemail from Mr. Khalil--not about why I wasn't given a script but trying to sell me again! I had already paid for the exam, so I was entitled to the prescription by law, and the sales tactics were frustrating. The exam was also over 50 per cent more than the most I had ever paid in the past, and since insurance never covers these exams unless contacts are "medically necessary" anyway, it's not an insurance difference but a provider difference (may also vary by city/market). I took extra time to return the following week in-person to pick up the prescription, and Mr. Khalil was in no hurry when I got there. I think that Dr. Stephens is deserving of a better partner. I doubt that I will return here :(

I might have just had an uncharacteristically bad experience, but I would not choose to continue my eye exams here for a couple of reasons. First, the guy running the place is pushy, rude, and hovers. He comes across more snake-oil salesman than professional (as I believe another review may have said). No thanks. Second, I found Ms. Stephens to be equally unpleasant/condescending. I remember saying that my sight was still blurry in one eye when testing different contacts, and she just seemed annoyed, which was odd, because getting it right is why I was there in the first place. When I was checking out I was heavily (annoyingly) encouraged to purchase from them, and I had to ask for my prescription info on paper. The guy did hand it over to me AFTER I asked but I could tell he was miffed. I think I did my first contact purchase through them, but have since been using 1-800-Contacts. When it's time for my next exam I will be going elsewhere.

*This review is for the business, not the doctor. I filled out the forms beforehand but they didn't let me know until I got there that they are out of network for my insurance. They tried to convince me to stay and pay out-of-network, saying they would discount the service to make it cheaper. After spending 40 minutes on the phone with my insurance provider I learned that in fact it would still be significantly more expensive even with their discount so I left. It was a frustrating experience that could have all been avoided if they accepted that as someone who is out of network it was a waste of everyone's time to try to convince me to stay.

This shouldn't reflect on Dr. Stephens but it does bring down the quality of the entire experience significantly. The gentleman at the front got aggravated that I found the same pair of frames online for much cheaper after my visit - "But your insurance covers most of it." Well, not a lot of it. It would have if I gone online and did it myself. Sure, these businesses need to make a profit. Shame on me for not doing my research first. Shame on him for not providing good customer service. And I'm sure Dr. Stephens hears how he treats these customers as he was particularly loud with me on the phone. I will not be back. They lost my business.

Terrible "bedside" manner. I'm not sure if I came in on a bad day for this OD, but she was very rude and condescending. When I mentioned that I forget to take my contacts out before bed time 2-3x a month, she responded with, "Do you even read the labels on your contact lenses?". Like many other customers, the man at the desk was deceptive about ordering contacts through them. He promised that he was selling them for much less than online stores and that I "should be supporting small businesses" like theirs. So I ordered through them, and then found the contacts for considerably less on 1-800-Contacts. I will not be returning to this office and I would warn others of visiting. My experience was characterized as deceptive, rude, and condescending.

I really like Dr. Stephens and have been coming to her for three+ years. At my appointment today she did not remember me, though. I don't mind at all but it could save me time for her to look up my prior records for the sake of a smooth appointment (not having to re-explain my history) since I'm already in their system and on Zoc Doc. Separately, the man who handles her sales and glasses sales is a nice man but way too pushy. He tried to get me to put down a deposit for glasses that I would prefer to order next month instead of this month (so that I can spread out the cost) when a deposit is not necessary (which I figured out after several probing questions). He kept making comments that made me feel cheap when really I am a young adult paying all of my own expenses and loans and as a loyal customer of three+ years I don't think I should be made to feel bad for not wanting to make a big purchase (visit + contact lenses + glasses) all at once. Really I am being a responsible adult and I would appreciate an itemized receipt with what I paid for the visit as well as the contact lenses, minus any health insurance coverage, so that I understand my final cost for the day. It seems like he just pulls the final amount that I owe out of thin air. Dr. Stephens is great but the customer service on the sales side is a little offensive.

She was very thorough, far more so than eye doctors I've seen at big eyeglass stores like LensCrafters. She listened to my concerns and asked lots of questions. I only felt a bit awkward getting a copy of my prescription, which everyone in the office seemed hesitant to give due to the popularity of online glasses retailers. In the end I felt obligated to purchase glasses at the store she's based out of and ended up with frames I don't much like, but at least the prescription is spot on!

Dr. Stephens is a fantastic optometrist! She asked thorough questions and helped me learn about aspects of eye care that I didn't know about even though I've worn contacts for 12 years. It was easy to make an appointment at her office and her staff called to confirm both after making the appointment on ZocDoc and the day of, which made me feel secure knowing that they were ready to see me. The location is super convenient if you work downtown.

My appointment with Dr. Stephens was my third eye exam in the last six months. (The other two doctors did not prescribe contact lenses and were seen for different reasons.) Not only did Dr. Stephens come up with a wildly different prescription from the other two doctors (whose prescriptions matched), she sent me away with sample contact lenses and told me to call back the following week with an update. After paying out of pocket (despite advertisements that the practice took my insurance), I left the office with no prescription in hand for contacts or glasses. When I called Dr. Stephens back the following week and told her the contacts were not working (uncomfortable, and surprise! not the correct prescription), her response was just "OK." After a long pause, she asked me what I wanted to do about it. I said I didn't know since she was the doctor. She said I needed to come back in for ANOTHER appointment. When I asked her if I would have to pay for another appointment, her nonchalant response was "well let me know what you want to do." What do I want to do? First and foremost, share my experience, so other patients will know not to go to Dr. Stephens. I won't be back. EVER!

This rating is for the entire practice and use of ZocDoc to book my appointment. The practitioner is personable and competent, and I would see her again if she were at a better practice. First, the practice did not have the paperwork I completed on ZocDoc, so I had to do it again. The practice blamed ZocDoc for this inconvenience. The reason I will not be coming back is the optician who helps with eyeglasses and payment. He was rude, pushy, and generally misinformed about insurance. He argued with me over the copayment repeating the amount. The nice assistant who checked me in showed him he was mistaken- no apology given. He begrudgingly provided me with my Rx and my pupillary distance and I took my business elsewhere.

I didn't like this appointment. This is the second time that I have seen this doctor. She was nice for the first appointment, but today she seemed a bit rude. Maybe she had a bad day, but I didn't like that I felt pressured to buy either. Probably won't be returning.

I have seen her twice, and both times I was seen very quickly. I like to ask a lot of questions about my care to understand the science behind the recommendations, and Dr. Stephens was happy to walk me through any of the questions I had. She also asked leading questions based on observations that anticipated some issues I was having (but hadn't relayed), which is exactly what I expect from a good physician.

Dr. Stephens was very helpful, and I had a lot of confidence in her knowledge and examination skills. The gentleman who was selling the actual glasses seemed kind of shady though. He just wrote some numbers down on a sheet of paper with no explanation, then told me that's how much it was. Overall, it was an excellent experience though.

Would never go back! The man in the front is very pushy and not good to work with. She was fine, but she pretty much told me that an issue i'd been previously diagnosed with was being handled terribly. Even after I told her that I was handling it my preferred method she indicated that it was incorrect. Right. Okay. Maybe she was looking out for me, but her manner and tone were abrasive and I didn't really appreciate her approach.

My first time here. The waiting time was really quick, the vibe was good and I learnt more about my eyes in this single appointment than in my many eye health appointments prior. Lauren has a great bedside manner, clearly loves her job and is excellent at translating complex content to a lay audience. It was clear they are a small office needing, and in fact encouraging their patients to buy any products (contacts, lenses) through their practice. Although Dr. Stephens was nice, she certainly had an ulterior motive by not handing over my prescriptions when I asked for them, which was uncomfortable. The receptionist, a sweet older man, checked me out including a year supply of contacts in my total which I did not ask for. Unfortunately I will not return to this office.

The man who worked the front desk also charged me significantly more for contacts than the prices I found online and didn't provide an invoice. Dr. Stephens was wonderful. Extremely personable, warm, welcoming, and knowledgeable. She thoroughly explained all aspects of the examine and ask through questions to determine the best contacts that fit with my daily habits and eye issues (dry eyes, constantly in front of computer, etc). The other staff...not as impressive...I didn't get a copy of my prescription and wasn't asked if I'd be ordering my contacts through their office; the guy just placed the order and rang it all up. I didn't even get a quote. Dr. Stephens, two thumbs up. Support staff...no so much.

I truly felt like a valued customer! She listened to me discuss my personal eye health and habits and gave great feedback and suggestions. After a very thorough and informative eye exam, she recommended contacts that were perfect for my personal needs and fitness routine! She also informed me about UV rays and protecting my eyes while outdoors. She also asked about my personal habits such as computer usage and how this impacts my vision. The shop owner was able to recommend glasses that I love and fit them perfectly to my face quickly. Overall, the staff members were friendly and I love that this wasn't some chain store; it felt more personal and I was well-attended! They are also located in a very central DC location! This will be the ONLY place I go to in DC for my vision needs :-)

Dr. Stephens was not that bad considering the office is terrible. The exam room looks like an old storage room and part of the exam is done in the lobby in front of other patients. My main problem is with the used car salesman working the front counter. He basically made up information about my insurance and then seemed annoyed when I called back to see why my insurance was never processed. I am going to be getting a second opinion and I suggest avoiding this place all together.

I appreciate the quality of care from Dr Stephens and she was very detail oriented, but my office visit was not the best experience. I had inputted my information to check in over a day before on ZocDoc and there was no comment from the office that my insurance provider information may be inaccurate. Only after my visit, they informed me of this and I very politely asked if I can go to my work, check online, and give them the correct insurance information. They insisted that I pay out of pock (quoted at a significant amount) before leaving and even said "well we've already tried everything so what do you want us to do." I called back within 15 minutes with the correct insurance provider and saved hundreds from not being charged out of pocket. When I inquired about the details (e.g., contact lens price vs. visit price), the man implied that "its cheap enough, isn't it" and I had to ask three times to get the itemized information. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Stephens for her medical expertise, but would have appreciated a higher degree of professionalism and flexibility for new patients from the staff.

I had a great experience with Dr. Stephens! She's very personable, and she took the time to answer all my questions. I would recommend her were she located in a different office. Everything else about my visit was odd. It's a strange little office that looks more like a used jewelry store than a doctors' office. They were very busy when I arrived, and since there are only two chairs in the waiting area, there was nowhere to sit and fill out paperwork. The surly man at the front desk was not a good communicator - I asked him several questions about the bill, getting a copy of my prescription, etc., none of which he directly answered. He also told me that he was unable to give me an actual bill or printed summary of my visit, nor could I get a copy of my prescription, until I came back to pick up my contacts. The only thing I left with was a standard credit card machine receipt.

The glasses saleman was a tiny bit pushy, but dropped it after I told him flat out I was not looking to get new glasses today, I don't know why that was so hard for other reviewers to tell him. If I'm still in the area when I need to get a new rx, I would go see this doctor again without a thought.

Dr. Stephens is kind of rude. I thought maybe she was having a bad day, but when I went back to pick up my glasses, I heard her say the same thing to another patient, so maybe it's just her! While I do think being on your phone while talking to someone else is not very polite, I don't think it's appropriate for someone to say "I'll wait till you're done," with a closed eye eye-roll. All I'd done was look down to check why it was buzzing, I wasn't even texting. She was very short the entire time, and even when I tried to joke, she just wasn't having it. She made me feel like an idiot for not seeing an optometrist more frequently, and just overall wasn't very friendly. The rest of the staff is great, and I liked the selection of frames.

I wish I had known when I scheduled my appointment that I chose a timeslot for which eye dilation is not available. But Dr. Stephens explained that I could schedule an appointment earlier another day, within a month, and be covered by the same copay as my first visit. This has no bearing on the service I received from Dr. Stephens, but I did not like feeling pressured to try on glasses immediately after getting the test and new prescription. I didn't like the brands available, but felt obligated by Mr. Khalil, the salesperson, to stay and try several pairs on. When I was able to convince him I just wanted to pay for my exam, he relented, but then said that the doctor had left before signing my prescription, so I now have to go back and pick it up. That part of the visit just didn't feel right to me, but, as I said before, it has no bearing on the medical services provided.

My visit with Dr. Stephens was about average. Dr. Stephens is compete and did a good job of looking at my eyes and helping me to understand the results of the eye exam. I did feel at times she chastised me for various things, and even cut me off mid sentence once. Following the examination, my experience with negative. The gentleman fitting me for glasses came off more as a used car saleman and really pressured me to make a decision right then and there and buy glasses and contacts. He seemed perturbed when I told him I wanted to think about it for a day or two. He didn't even give me a receipt for the office visit. Very unpleasant experience.

My only issue with Dr. Stephens was the wait time, but she came out to apologize to me right before she took someone in for a 5-10 minute consultation when it was my time to be seen. She apologized again when she game to get me. I appreciated both her giving me the heads up that I wouldn't be seen on time and her genuine apology for the wait. I wasn't sure if this was a doctor's office or a used cars lot. A lot of pressure to buy buy buy - contacts, glasses, more appointments - and not much information. I was even charged $10 for my sample contacts to be shipped! Keep in mind this is a total of 10 daily contacts that weigh little more than a standard envelope. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually get the contact samples for free and are just scamming their patients.

The man (who I'm guessing is the owner from the other reviews) was incredibly aggressive and down right rude. After telling me that there's no way they my insurance covered what I thought it did he then proceeded to raise his voice and ask me over and over how I expected him to make money. (The much more civil women who also worked the front of the businesss confirmed with my insurance company that what I expected to be charged was, in fact, correct.) The doctor was rather condescending as well, and I left my initial visit unaware that she had changed my prescription in only one eye.
