“She has been easy to open up to. She obviously does her homework as she brings back threads we had covered in the past. She maintains good eye contact and gives subtle affirmations head k nodding for example. I find her technique subtle but I know she is listening,”

“Layal is the first therapist that I feel like I can be truly honest with. Our sessions are a good mix of comforting and difficult - I leave feeling both validated and slightly pushed out of my comfort zone. I can bring anything to the table, and I leave with insight, acceptance, and a bit of peace. ”

Getting to know Dr. Layal Al Mosawi

No topic is off limits in our sessions, and nothing is “too big” or “too small” to talk about. I work with individuals who are trying to explore and better understand who they are, to understand their relationships with friends and lovers, and who are grappling with major life changes like relocation, changing careers, or recovering from painful past experiences. My clinical experience has ranged from treating patients with chronic pain to therapy with international survivors of torture. I earned my PsyD from Roosevelt University, which has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to support clients through a wide range of challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a result of my broad range of experience, including with culturally diverse individuals, I have an immense appreciation for and curiosity about the things that make you, you. I have a welcoming, curious, and nonjudgemental style. Many clients experience me as friendly, open-minded, and thoughtful about their challenges and concerns. We all have different experiences of the world, and I will do my best to see the world from your eyes. In the first few sessions, and as treatment continues, we will collaborate to find meaningful ways forward in your life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In sessions, any thoughts, feelings, or beliefs are welcome to be shared. Individuals of all backgrounds are welcome. I have specific expertise working with POC and culturally diverse clients, exploring issues such as oppressive systems, separation from family, and adapting to US life. I also have expertise in working with sexual minority clients, who many be managing romantic and familial challenges or identity questions. I tend to conceptualize and work primarily from a psychodynamic perspective, but may also borrow and integrate other techniques and therapies according to your needs. I can conduct therapy in both English and Arabic.
