Getting to know Makeba Matthews

My approach is collaborative, trauma-informed, and grounded in both empathy and clinical precision. I strive to create a safe, judgment-free space where clients feel heard and empowered. I integrate evidence-based psychopharmacology with a whole-person perspective, considering emotional, physical, social, and spiritual wellness. Theoretical Approaches I Commonly Use: I primarily draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)-informed practices. I also incorporate trauma-informed care principles, mindfulness-based strategies, and strengths-based approaches to tailor care to the unique needs of each client. My goal is always to support lasting, meaningful change while honoring each person’s lived experience. I work with adolescents, adults, and older adults navigating a wide range of mental health concerns. I specialize in treating individuals with ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, trauma-related conditions, eating disorders, and stress-related insomnia. I particularly enjoy working with clients who are ready to explore the connection between mental and physical health, and I support clients through life transitions, emotional regulation challenges, and medication management with compassion and respect. My communication style is warm, honest, and collaborative. I believe in active listening, clear explanations, and shared decision-making. I aim to make each session feel like a safe and supportive conversation, not a checklist. I adapt my tone and approach based on the individual’s needs, whether they prefer straightforward guidance, gentle encouragement, or a blend of both. My journey into mental health care began with a deep desire to support people beyond surface-level symptoms. As a nurse, I witnessed how emotional pain often goes unspoken and untreated, and I knew I wanted to be a part of changing that.
