Getting to know Dr. Mark Viner

Mark Viner, MD, is a Board-Certified private practice Psychiatrist in Reno, Nevada since 2009. Born and raised in Hollywood, California, he attended the University of Southern California. He earned his MD from Spartan Health Sciences University in St. Lucia, West Indies, then completed internal medicine internship at Yale University School of Medicine (Griffin Hospital) and psychiatry residency at University of Connecticut School of Medicine. Dr. Viner served as a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and staff psychiatrist at the State Mental Hospital, then a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and staff psychiatrist at State Mental Hospitals in both Las Vegas and Reno for several years. He received the NAMI Exemplary Psychiatrist Award twice, one in Litchfield County, Connecticut and again in Washoe County, Nevada. He participated in FDA clinical trials and Speaker’s bureau for several pharmaceutical companies. His published works include the book, Suicide, and articles in numerous psychiatric journals such as the Journal of Psychopharmacology, Psychiatric Services, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, and Neuro-psychopharmacology. He has provided telemedicine services in a variety of clinical settings including inpatient, outpatient and correctional center settings as well as direct care through Doctor on Demand. As a member of the Society of Cannabis Clinicians, he hopes to bridge the gap between psychiatry and medical cannabis. Dr. Viner has consulted in local, state and federal cannabis related programs and has presentations to the DEA and FDA on that topic. His recent 5-part video series in Psychiatric Times and his key role as a Journal Reviewer of the most read article in Frontiers in Oncology entitled” Meta-analysis of Medical Cannabis Outcomes and Associations with Cancer” shows he can branch out beyond his specialty and contributes to advances in medicine.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am non judgmental, caring and compassionate about my work. I have received my best awards in psychiatry from patients and families of the mentally ill. My best referal source is from other patients over the years. I provide quality personalized medical psychiatric care, as well as health and wellness coaching in a stress free setting. I DO NOT prescribe controlled substances in this out-patient setting. I combine medication management with supportive therapy most of the time and have complete follow up visits as we work together. I don't rush thru a visit, you always see an MD (me) at each visit and I offer affordable prices for the services.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I prefer the first visit to be in person at my clinic in Nevada for psychiatric care, then most visits can be done via telemedicine at your convenience if . I like to do an extensive and complete initial psychiatric evaluation and then have comprehensive follow up visits involving medication management, counseling and support. I have very open and accessible hours and there is usually no wait for appointments. I make the cost very reasonable knowing many people can not afford psychiatric care often needed.
