He identified a life-threatening perforated appendicitis that had been misdiagnosed as diverticulitis at a community hospital. After examining me, he immediately contacted my office and urged me to seek emergency treatment—an action that likely saved my life.
As my primary care physician and gastroenterologist, he consistently provides comprehensive and meticulous care. During a routine evaluation, he detected my breast cancer early and promptly referred me to a highly skilled network of specialists, including surgeons, reconstruction surgeons, and an oncologist, ensuring seamless and exceptional care.
I am forever grateful for his vigilance, expertise, and compassion. Dr. Koutsos is simply outstanding. I also want to extend special thanks to his incredible office team — Kelly, June, and Linda — who make every visit pleasant and seamless. ”

About Dr. Markos Koutsos
Dr. Markos I. Koutsos received his medical degree from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens School of Medicine. He completed his Fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Liver Disease at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, graduating in 1996. After fellowship, he spent a few months at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in England, where he received further training in advanced endoscopic procedures, including laser treatments and stent placements. Currently, Dr. Koutsos is on staff at N.Y. Methodist Hospital and practices in Bayridge, Brooklyn, and Manhattan.
His expertise includes esophageal dilations, botulinum toxin injections, infrared coagulation of hemorrhoids, small intestinal endoscopy, ERCP with sphincterotomy and stone retrieval, and chronic liver disease, including recent combination interferon-ribavirin treatment for chronic hepatitis.
Dr. Koutsos conducts extensive research at Cornell University Medical Center and Rockefeller University on colorectal cancer prevention and the mechanisms by which different nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs reduce the incidence of colon cancer. Presently, he is involved in a large-scale study on this subject at Rockefeller University Hospital. He has published numerous articles and delivered many lectures on colon cancer prevention at international meetings.
