Getting to know Dr. Marla Richard

**THIS PROVIDER DOES NOT TREAT ADHD** Dr. Marla Richard is a Stanford-trained, board-certified psychiatrist and board-eligible in geriatric psychiatry from UCSD. She has been practicing in a variety of settings for the last 30 years. Dr. Richard uses an integrated health paradigm with general and geriatric patients, combining traditional psychopharmacology, interpersonal neurobiology practices, and personality assessments to explore root motivations for behaviors, addressing core issues with medication management as needed. Dr. Marla believes in taking a whole-person approach to both mental and physical health. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, followed by medical school at Stanford University, where she earned her Doctor of Medicine. With visions of becoming a general surgeon, she completed two years of general surgery training and her internship in psychiatry at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center before transferring to psychiatry residency at Stanford. Many years later, she completed her geriatric psychiatry training at UCSD. Her focus includes an integrated approach to mental and physical health while incorporating mindfulness tools to teach skills for stress and anxiety management in everyday life. In conjunction with medication management, she uses interpersonal neurobiology to help clients understand triggers and methods to calm overactive stress responses and reactivity.

Because we accept insurance, we can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and still offer high-quality care. You may not have any cost related to your visit with us, depending upon your insurance plan. Most patients pay a small copay per visit, subject to any deductible or coinsurance that your health plan has. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines appropriate billing guidelines. These guidelines depend on the length of the visit and the complexity and severity of your diagnosis. For this reason, we need to wait until after the visit for the final determination. We then submit the claim to your insurance company. The charges are calculated based upon pre-negotiated prices with your insurance company. Your insurance company will then determine what amount, if any, is your responsibility per your insurance plan.

I had requested talk therapy. With the practice name of talkiatry, I thought this would be the right place. The doctor was fine, but only prescribes meds and doesn't do talk therapy, That is was I had requested.

FANTASTIC! Dr. Richard really listened to what I was saying and feeling. She never interrupted me and I never felt rushed. I was hesitant to see a psychiatrist via virtual health, but she made me feel very comfortable. She spent a lot of time explaining my conditions, as well as providing non medicinal tools for treatment. I received conflicting information regarding whether or not my insurance was accepted, but that is definitely not a knock on her part. I just hope insurance does cover, so that I can continue seeing this wonderful doctor.
