Dr. Matthew Mills, MD

Psychiatrist
IL
With warm sincerity, I welcome you to my practice! I am a licensed and Board-Certified psychiatrist with 18 years of private practice experience. I enjoy working with a wide range of patients with a particular emphasis on treating adult patients struggling with depression, anxiety, bipolar spectrum and adult ADHD. I am available primarily for virtual consultation through ZocDoc; however (depending on availability) I may be able to accomodate patients requesting in-person meetings. My private practice office is located in the Lakeview neighborhood of Chicago and boasts a warm ambiance with exposed brick and timber loft ceilings. I am committed to building rapport with my patients through empathic listening, caring and warmth. Our rapport is significantly strengthened when my patients gain confidence in my abilities to help them. As a graduate of the University of Illinois Medical Center, I have been well-trained in evidence-based psychopharmacology. For many psychiatric disorders (especially mood and anxiety disorders), current research has shown that the most effective treatment is a combination of psychotherapy and the use of medication. Psychotherapy often increases the effectiveness of medication. Similarly, the use of medication can reduce distressing symptoms to a degree where psychotherapy can be most useful. Whenever medications are used, the decision will be made collaboratively. I may make recommendations regarding the use of medication; however, if you do not wish to take psychiatric medications, you retain that right without pressure or coercion. Your mind and body are precious. You deserve to be treated with sincere concern, dignity and respect, always. I look forward to meeting you! - Dr. Mills

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a Board-Certified psychiatrist specializing in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, bipolar spectrum and adult ADHD. Although I do accept patients for recurring psychotherapy on occasion, I am primarily a specialist in medication-consultation. Many patients prefer to see me for medication concerns while I assist them in getting linked with a quality therapist (perhaps one within their insurance network) for weekly therapy. Follow up visits last approximately 20 minutes. I schedule only 2 patients per hour. My style is direct, warm and respectful. I pride myself on helping patients to feel comfortable and making concepts and instructions easy to understand.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

All new patients are scheduled for the 1 hour initial diagnostic evaluation during which a clinical interview will be conducted, pertinent medical records will be reviewed and an initial assessment and treatment plan will be developed and discussed with you. The most common interval for follow up visits is once per month in the beginning of treatment, then patients generally reduce the frequency of their appointments as they are feeling comfortable and stable on their medication regimen. My follow up medication visits are approximately 20 minutes in length, which allows for more time than just brief review of medication issues. If you are interested in discussing medication, I would be an excellent person with whom to have that discussion. Many patients prefer to see me for medication concerns while I assist them in getting linked with a quality therapist (perhaps one within their insurance network) for weekly therapy. Then they have the benefit of care and attention from two providers (myself and their primary therapist).
