Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
3303 Tulane Ave Bldg 1, New Orleans, LA
Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, MSN, APRN, PMHNP I enjoy working with children, adolescents, teens, and young adults and helping them feel comfortable talking about their mental health. I understand that meeting with a psychiatric provider can feel intimidating, especially for a child or teenager, so I make it a priority to create a welcoming, respectful environment where young people can feel heard and understood. I provide psychiatric evaluations, medication management, psychotherapy, and behavioral health assessments for children beginning at age 6, as well as adolescents, teens, and young adults. I work with concerns including ADHD, anxiety, depression, mood and behavioral concerns, and other mental health needs. I also provide ADHD screening and other assessments when clinically appropriate. My approach is focused on understanding the whole person rather than focusing only on a diagnosis. I consider developmental stage, family and school experiences, relationships, behavior, and other factors that may influence a young person's mental health. For adolescents experiencing substance use concerns, I can also participate in a broader treatment plan that may include substance use treatment and adolescent SUD Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) services through Healthy Avenues Medical Group. When desired, I can incorporate Christian faith values and principles into treatment. My goal is to help young people and their families better understand what they are experiencing and feel supported in finding a path toward improved mental and emotional well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I know that it can be difficult for a child or teenager to sit down with a new provider and immediately talk about personal feelings, behaviors, or challenges. I don't expect that trust to happen instantly. I take the time to build rapport, listen, and help young people feel comfortable being themselves. I try to meet children and adolescents at their level and communicate in a way that feels natural and age-appropriate. My goal is for young people to feel that they have a voice in their care while also helping parents and caregivers understand how they can best support them. I believe parents and caregivers are an important part of a young person's treatment. When appropriate, I work collaboratively with families while respecting the developmental needs and privacy of the child or adolescent. Treatment may include psychotherapy, medication management, behavioral health assessments, ADHD screening, or a combination of approaches depending on the individual's needs. For adolescents experiencing substance use concerns, Healthy Avenues also offers structured substance use treatment, including adolescent substance abuse Intensive Outpatient group Program (SUD IOP) services. Families who want a faith-informed approach can also choose to incorporate their values and principles into treatment. Most importantly, I want children, teens, and families to feel that they are coming into a place where they will be treated with patience, respect, and compassion.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first appointment is primarily about getting to know the child or young person and understanding what brought them to treatment. I will ask about their current concerns, developmental and medical history, school experiences, relationships, family environment, and overall emotional and behavioral well-being. I also want to hear from parents or caregivers about what they have observed and what concerns they may have. Depending on the child's age and the reason for the visit, I will create opportunities for both the young person and their caregiver to participate appropriately in the evaluation. When clinically appropriate, I may use screening tools and other assessments to better understand what a child or adolescent is experiencing. This may include ADHD screening and evaluation of other emotional, behavioral, or mental health concerns. After the evaluation, I will discuss my recommendations and work with the family to develop an individualized treatment plan. Depending on the individual's needs, this may include psychotherapy, medication management, behavioral strategies, ongoing monitoring, or a combination of approaches. For adolescents with substance use concerns, we may also discuss whether additional structured services, including adolescent SUD Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and group-based treatment, would be appropriate. When additional support is needed, I can work alongside the broader Healthy Avenues behavioral health team to help coordinate care. Throughout treatment, we will monitor progress and make adjustments as needed. My goal is to make psychiatric care feel approachable and collaborative while helping young people and their families feel more informed, supported, and hopeful about what comes next.
