Getting to know Mckinley Sledge

I have 30 years' experience in Mental Health and Substance abuse. I'm licensed as a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and Human Services. My experience enables me to offer effective outpatient, individualized, psychiatric care. I treat a number of mental health disorders through supportive psychotherapy and medication management. My focus is to help individuals heal, energize, and become aware of their inner strengths. I achieve this by providing a neutral safe space, listening to your concerns, and customizing a treatment plan. My goal is to help you grow from your struggles, heal from your pain, and move forward to where you want to be in your life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My Approach to Psychiatric Care As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP), my approach to care is patient-centered, collaborative, and holistic. I believe that effective mental health treatment begins with listening, understanding your story, and working together to create a plan that fits your individual needs, values, and goals. I practice a trauma-informed, culturally sensitive, and evidence-based model of care. This means I consider not only symptoms and diagnoses, but also your life experiences, stressors, physical health, environment, relationships, and personal strengths. Treatment may include: Thoughtful, individualized medication management Psychoeducation so you understand your diagnosis and treatment options Supportive and brief therapeutic interventions Collaboration with therapists, primary care providers, and other specialists when appropriate Integration of lifestyle factors such as sleep, nutrition, stress management, and routines into your care plan I view treatment as a partnership, not a one-size-fits-all model. You are an active participant in decisions about your care, and your voice matters in every step of the process. My goal is to provide a space that feels safe, respectful, nonjudgmental, and supportive, where you feel heard and empowered—not rushed or dismissed. Together, we work toward improved stability, functioning, and quality of life, not just symptom reduction.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

During your visit, we will start by discussing your current concerns, symptoms, and goals for treatment. I use a structured but conversational diagnostic process, which may include a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, review of medical history, medication history, and standardized screening tools when appropriate. Sessions focus primarily on evaluation, diagnosis, and medication management, with time for education about your condition and treatment options. While I provide supportive, brief therapeutic interventions, I do not offer long-term psychotherapy. When ongoing therapy would be beneficial, I collaborate with or refer to licensed therapists to ensure comprehensive care. Each session is collaborative, respectful, and focused on helping you feel informed, supported, and actively involved in your treatment plan.
