I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner. In that role, I provide medication management for numerous different psychiatric conditions. My approach to medication management is very conservative. My goal is to help alleviate symptoms with as little medication as needed. In addition to medication management, I also discussed other treatment plan options. While I feel that medication is beneficial, often it is not the only choice. I have worked with individuals throughout the life span, including children and adolescents. I have experience treating all kinds of psychiatric conditions, including mood and anxiety disorders, ADHD, autism, OCD, and personality disorders. Rather than looking at the appointments as provider-driven, I tend to view them as more of a collaborative and team approach between myself and the patient, which includes working alongside them in coming up with a treatment plan. I have worked in numerous medical fields as a registered nurse for over 15 years, and during that time, I discovered my passion for helping those with mental health needs. I saw that often only the physical issues were being addressed, but the mental health issues were being overlooked. I also saw the severe lack of help available for those struggling with mental health. Over 5 years ago, I decided to return to higher education and pursue a degree in psychiatry as a nurse practitioner. Rather than focusing on diagnoses and coming up with a goal structured towards the diagnosis, I prefer to listen to the patient and explore their goals and then together, come up with a planned path towards helping them reach those goals. During the first appointment, we will spend time discussing both past and current psychiatric symptoms, what has and has not worked. I listen to the patient regarding their goals and then review treatment plan options to assist in obtaining those goals.
