I decided to become a primary care doctor to help patients understand the seriousness of their chronic conditions and to help them connect how the daily choices we make regarding food and physical activity could cost us our lives.
Bernice Collins was my grandmother. In my eyes, she was an angel and loved by many. Her PCP diagnosed her with diabetes and counseled her to cut down on sweets. No medication or further counseling was advised. My grandmother kept having her evening snacks before bed. Her life ended after being comatose with a blood sugar over 800. She did not understand what diabetes was or how to manage it. She did not realize that uncontrolled blood sugar could be fatal. After her loss, I vowed to be of service to my patients-to screen them, educate them, answer all their questions, follow up, and ensure their actions bring the desired results.
I earned my Doctor of Medicine from Wayne State University, where I also completed my residency.
