Getting to know Oluwaseyi Soetan

Soetan is a Doctor of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing specializing in psychiatric mental health, committed to providing holistic, compassionate, and personalized care. He is board-certified as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner by the ANCC. With over 20 years of clinical experience in behavioral health, Isaiah treats patients across the lifespan, focusing on adolescents, young adults, and seniors. He received his Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Babcock University, Nigeria, and earned both his Master's and Doctor of Science in Nursing from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, where he also completed his Doctor of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing. Isaiah's specialty lies in addressing a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders. He utilizes a patient-centered approach, integrating evidence-based practices with individualized treatment plans to ensure comprehensive care. I aim to create a welcoming, understanding, and informative environment in our interactions. I focus on being clear, empathetic, and supportive, much like a thoughtful guide or a patient teacher. I adapt my communication style to your needs and preferences, ensuring you feel heard, respected, and valued in our conversations.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, I approach care with a balance of clinical precision and genuine empathy. A new client should know that our work together is collaborative, structured, and focused on measurable progress—not just symptom relief, but functional improvement in daily life. What to expect: Comprehensive, evidence-based evaluation: Your first visit is thorough. I assess symptoms, history, lifestyle factors, and any contributing medical or psychosocial variables to arrive at an accurate diagnosis. Personalized treatment planning: Care is not one-size-fits-all. I tailor interventions—whether medication management, psychotherapy-informed strategies, or lifestyle adjustments—based on your specific needs, goals, and preferences. Medication management with transparency: If medications are indicated, I will explain the rationale, expected benefits, potential side effects, and alternatives. You remain fully informed and involved in decision-making. Safe, nonjudgmental environment: You can speak openly about sensitive issues—whether related to mood, trauma, ADHD, relationships, or even topics often overlooked like medication side effects (including sexual health). Goal-oriented care: We define clear treatment goals early (e.g., improved sleep, reduced anxiety episodes, better focus, emotional stability) and track progress over time. Accountability and consistency: Improvement requires engagement. I expect clients to participate actively—attend sessions, follow agreed plans, and communicate changes or concerns. Respect for your time and autonomy: Sessions are efficient but not rushed. Your voice matters in every decision. Ultimately, my role is to guide, treat, and support you—but also to equip you with tools to function independently and sustainably over time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process is structured, collaborative, and focused on measurable outcomes while remaining flexible to your individual needs. 1. Initial Evaluation (Intake) We begin with a comprehensive psychiatric assessment—not a quick visit. I review your symptoms, history (psychiatric, medical, social), past treatments, and current functioning. Outcome: A clear diagnosis or working formulation with an initial direction. 2. Treatment Planning We develop a personalized plan based on your goals and clinical needs. This may include medication, therapy-informed strategies, or both. Outcome: Defined goals (e.g., improved sleep, reduced anxiety, better focus) and a clear plan. 3. Treatment Initiation If medication is appropriate, I start conservatively and adjust based on response. I will explain the benefits, risks, and what to expect. Non-medication strategies (e.g., CBT-informed tools, behavioral changes) are also introduced as needed. Outcome: Active treatment begins with clear guidance. 4. Follow-Up & Monitoring Regular follow-ups (often every 2–4 weeks initially) focus on tracking progress, side effects, and adherence. Adjustments are made based on your response. Outcome: Ongoing optimization of your treatment. 5. Stabilization As symptoms improve, visits become less frequent. We reinforce coping strategies and address any remaining concerns. Outcome: Consistent symptom control and improved daily functioning. 6. Maintenance & Long-Term Care We focus on sustaining progress, preventing relapses, and determining whether to continue or adjust treatment over time. Coordination with other providers may be included. Outcome: Long-term stability and independence. Core Approach: Collaborative, transparent, and results-driven. You’re actively involved at every step, and care is adjusted based on real progress—not guesswork.

Really awesome!

Considering I tried to have an appointment with someone else two hours before, and he discriminated me and didn’t listen to me and shut me down, and anytime I talked about my trauma with racism or anything. He didn’t acknowledge it, when I got my appointment with him later that night, it was such a relief to have someone actually listen to me and believe me, especially as a male and he diagnosed me properly, and already booked me another appointment. If it wasn’t for him believing me I’m not sure where I would be.

The nurse practitioner was very thorough. Also educated me on different medication’s. He made some adjustments and we’re going to follow up in two weeks. He really seems supportive and sensitive and sincere. ?
