About Dr. Orna Izakson

Dr. Orna Izakson is a writer, registered herbalist, and an Alaska- and Oregon-licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in mental health, chronic disease, and women’s health at Alta Natural Medicine (Alaska) and Celilo Natural Health Center (Oregon). She earned her Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine from the National University of Natural Medicine, holds a Master’s in Journalism from the University of Missouri, and completed her undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University. Dr. Izakson has advanced training in herbal therapeutics, functional psychiatry, and climate-aware therapy. She completed a 3-year functional psychiatry fellowship with Psychiatry Redefined, where she is now a faculty member, instructing colleagues in herbal medicines for depression, anxiety, sleep, and seasonal-affective disorders. She is a past member of the Gaia Herbs science advisory board. In 2013, she launched the Traditional Roots Institute at the National University of Natural Medicine, working to bring the people’s medicine back to the people. Over more than six years as the institute's lead physician, she helped train hundreds of providers and prospective patients in the practical and profound uses of herbal medicine. Prior to her medical career, Dr. Izakson was an award-winning environment and science newspaper reporter, with work published in newspapers, magazines, books, and online media. Outside of practice, she continues her mission of educating the public about full-spectrum plant medicine through public presentations and online education. Dr. Izakson is vice president of the Alaska Association of Naturopathic Doctors, a member of the Climate Psychiatry Alliance, and founder of the Naturopathic Climate Alliance. An avid photographer since childhood, Dr. Orna can often be found sprawled by the side of the road with her camera lens set uncomfortably close to some pretty flower.
