Dr. Patricia Scherer, PhD

Psychologist
CA
I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from Palo Alto University and completed an APA-accredited predoctoral internship with an emphasis on child and family issues. I work with racially, culturally, and diagnostically diverse adolescents and adults coping with trauma, mood and anxiety disorders, identity concerns, and relational challenges, as well as children and families, helping them learn to navigate big feelings and the challenges that accompany them. In addition to psychotherapy, I specialize in neuropsychological assessment to clarify complex diagnoses, guide treatment, and provide academic accommodations. I have expertise in evaluating neurodevelopmental disorders, like ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder, as well as psychotic spectrum disorders in youth and adults. My goal is to make testing an empowering process that leads to clarity, validation, and meaningful next steps.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My work integrates trauma-informed, biopsychosocial, psychodynamic, somatic, and relational approaches, supported by skills-based interventions from Cognitive Behavioral and Dialectical Behavioral therapies. I strive to create a compassionate, collaborative, and holistic environment that fosters understanding and growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, we’ll take time to get to know you, your reasons for seeking therapy, what’s been most challenging, and what kind of support feels most meaningful right now. This conversation helps us understand whether we’re a good fit to work together. Finding the right therapist matters more than any single technique, and my priority is that you feel genuinely seen, understood, and supported. As we continue, our sessions become a collaborative space centered on whatever you bring in each week, whether that’s exploring current stressors, processing painful experiences, or deepening your awareness of long-standing patterns. Together, we’ll connect your present struggles to past experiences, helping uncover and heal the deeper wounds that may still shape how you relate to yourself and others. My approach is compassionate, reflective, and paced to your comfort, creating space for lasting change and emotional healing.
