Getting to know Dr. Peter McGowan

Dr. McGowan is a board-certified adult psychiatrist with over 14 years of experience during which he has primarily treated active-duty US Navy sailors, their family members, and military retirees in the outpatient setting. His practice focuses on medication management in addition to supportive and cognitive-behavioral therapy in 30-minute follow-up visits. He is a strong advocate of multiple treatment modalities and, in certain situations, may suggest that therapy and/or regular physical exercise be included in your treatment plan to provide the best outcome. He received his B.S. in Physics from United States Naval Academy. After serving as an Intelligence Officer in the Navy for eight years, he transitioned to medicine and earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. After completing an intern year in Family Medicine, Dr. McGowan completed residency training in Psychiatry at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, VA, where he remained on staff for the next ten years and was primarily involved in resident training and education. He held academic appointments at the Uniformed Services University and Eastern Virginia Medical School and served as the Psychiatry Residency Program Director for six years. He served his final four years in uniform running the behavioral health department at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, WA. He recently retired from the Navy after a 30-year career. Dr. McGowan has extensive experience in outpatient psychiatric care. In addition to the full spectrum of mood and anxiety disorders, he has treated a very large number of patients with PTSD stemming from combat, natural disasters, and sexual trauma. He believes that, like his service to the country, working alongside others in their journey to better mental health is an incredible privilege.

Because we accept insurance, we can reduce out-of-pocket expenses and still offer high-quality care. You may not have any cost related to your visit with us, depending upon your insurance plan. Most patients pay a small copay per visit, subject to any deductible or coinsurance that your health plan has. The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services determines appropriate billing guidelines. These guidelines depend on the length of the visit and the complexity and severity of your diagnosis. For this reason, we need to wait until after the visit for the final determination. We then submit the claim to your insurance company. The charges are calculated based upon pre-negotiated prices with your insurance company. Your insurance company will then determine what amount, if any, is your responsibility per your insurance plan.

Very helpful and engaging! My previous psychiatrist was very difficult to get in touch with and trying to get medication refills would be a nightmare. Dr. McGowan is diligent in his practice. I have not had any issues that have required me to reach out. Also, the app Healow is easy and seamless to use. The administrative staff at Talkiatry were helpful as well when I was submitting insurance information for the appointment.

Dr. McGowan is a highly experienced psychiatrist with a great bedside manner. He listened to me, which I greatly appreciated.

He noted he was only available for consultation about medication and could not help with counseling, and then appears to have hung up the call and ended the appointment, which was very strange.

Even though I chose the wrong Doctor for my specific needs, he still made our time together as valuable & useful as possible. That effort the doctor made was extremely professional, and it’s a shame that he isn’t the doctor for my specific needs, cuz he’s great at what he does.

He actually taught me something I didn’t exactly know about my condition that really blew my mind. I thought I knew everything but he taught me even more and we talked about resolutions to help me as well as medication. He really took the time to find out about me and cared and it really did show. The last person I saw the initial video call was 10 or less minutes, doctor did not care at all. But Peter McGowan really took the time with me, 1 hour long video call and I felt really good after the call! I would recommend if you want to be actually heard!

Great physician and overall experience. I would recommend him to anyone seeking assistance in his field of work. This was my first time using ZocDoc…and I was very pleased with the experience, despite not ever having done an online visit before!

I saw Dr. McGowan virtually through Talkiatry's platform. He listened closely, gave me excellent feedback, and scheduled a follow-up immediately at the end of my appointment to check in on how my medication working at the end of three weeks. Though it was on video, I did not feel rushed or that I was not being paid attention. As best one can over video, he maintained eye contact and did not seem to be distracted by his surroundings or anything on his computer. I would certainly recommend him to anyone looking for a provider.
