Getting to know Dr. Pooja Agarwal

I am a board-certified psychiatrist based in Lincolnwood, IL. I offer both in-person and virtual visits through my practice, Ellie Mental Health. I work with individuals facing a wide range of mental health concerns and strive to create a space where people feel truly heard, understood, and supported. My approach is rooted in evidence-based care, but I also believe that healing happens when we take the time to understand each person’s unique story, culture, and values. I aim to partner with my patients to find meaningful, lasting improvements in their well-being and daily life. I completed my medical degree at the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and my psychiatry residency at Rush University Medical Center. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work in a variety of clinical settings and with diverse populations, which continues to shape and deepen my practice.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want new clients to know that I genuinely care about getting to know you as a whole person—not just your symptoms. I value honesty, collaboration, and creating a space where you can feel safe being yourself. I understand that starting a new medication can feel overwhelming or even intimidating, and I’m here to meet you where you are with compassion and without judgment. We’ll work together to understand what’s going on beneath the surface, identify your goals, and create a treatment plan that feels manageable and meaningful to you. Whether you're seeking support for the first time or continuing your mental health journey, I’ll be your partner in it every step of the way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start with an in-depth 60-minute intake during our first appointment to really understand what’s going on and what your goals are. This gives us a strong foundation to develop a treatment plan that feels aligned with your needs. If we decide to start medication, we’ll work closely together to monitor how things are going and adjust as needed. Depending on the medication and your response, follow-up appointments might start every two weeks, then transition to monthly, and eventually every 3–6 months once symptoms are more stabilized. That said, I believe medication management is just one part of the treatment process. Research shows that combining medication with therapy leads to better outcomes—and I’ve seen this firsthand. I highly recommend working with one of the talented therapists in our clinic so you can receive collaborative, coordinated care all under one roof.

Dr. Agarwal really took her time and did a very thorough initial assessment. She spent a lot of time educating me about different treatment options, and I never felt rushed or pressured. Dr. Agarwal took my previous medical history into account and listened to what worked in the past. She didn’t give me a treatment plan that was “one plan fits all” and instead came up with a tailored solution that fits my needs. I recommend her whole heartedly to any patient that is looking to establish care with an excellent psychiatrist long term!
Dr. Agarwhal is an excellent provider. Her acumen with medical intervention is very holistic and multi-pronged, and I as a new patient of hers appreciate the context she carefully asked during the intake. I am thrilled to have found a great provider, and it is criminal there are no more than one review of her, so I am volunteering. She genuinely shows empathy and care. I would strongly recommend her as a provider. I truly look forward to working under her guidance. Don't snooze, book that appointment, get the help you need, and work with her and your therapist!
