Qualifications and Experience
I work with individual adult outpatients for the treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, and other mood disorders utilizing individual psychotherapy and medication management as appropriate.
Over the more than two decades that I have been in practice, the field of psychiatry has undergone dramatic changes. We now have available many medications that have significantly and substantially improved the quality of life and long term functioning of numerous people. A number of psychiatrists only see their patients for brief medication management visits on a reasonably infrequent basis. This is not a model of treatment that I employ or am comfortable with.
I was trained in a strongly psychotherapeutically oriented program. I am also well versed and skilled in the complex practice of psychopharmacology. It is my practice to individualize treatment plans based on each person's unique needs.
I am comfortable collaborating with psychotherapists and other treatment providers when appropriate. I do, however, also see patients for individual psychotherapy with or without the concomitant use of medications. My "pager" is my cell phone which permits patients to have easy access to me in the event of any problem.

dr reff is a great doctor who listerns to my needs
Dr Reff is very much like my former psychiatrist in D.C., Dr Robert Costell. Both men convey genuine interest in the well-being of their patients, and both exhibit superior clinical skills. Dr Reff strikes me as being a gold mine for Indiana--I would have expected to find him in New York or D.C. He's a downright humanistic doctor. 5 stars all around.
Dr. Reff Is a kind and caring individual. He is a wonderful doctor and he pulled me back from the brink of despair. I will always be grateful to him and can never thank him enough. He is an awesome doctor and I highly recommend him.
I like dr reff. a good guy who listens to me
Helped me stay alive..really
Really helpful both as a prescriber and as a talk-therapist.
The best !
Horrible. I never want this person again. I was emotionally and psychologically abused. I never booked a follow-up after canceling, and somehow was booked again by him for a different time, just by him alone.
Excellent visit. Up to date on meds and first rate feedback on my experiences and plans.
Dr. Robert Reff was highly recommended to me by a pain psychologist I see who had worked with him for several years at a prestigious University hospital in the Chicago area. I have found him to be enormously talented not only in his specialty but also in the wide field of human medicine he does not seem to have forgotten any of what he has learned over the course of his career. During our half hour sessions he is always ready to address my needs with the focused clarity of a true professional and zeroes in on any new concerns I may bring to him in a startlingly expeditious manner as if he could read my mind. He is a gifted, normal and happy person that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone needing the very highest level of medical care. I am honored to have this opportunity to place a little spotlight on a man who is what most of the very best of us aspire to be during the short span of our lifetimes. Sincerely, Gary R.
He's always a pleasure to visit. I always feel as if I have been treated right when I see Dr. Reff.
I was skeptical about ZocDoc after reading all of the accusations of "fake reviews," but kept the appointment anyway. Dr. Reff was, in fact, a real doctor, with a real office. He seemed very professional, organized, and web savvy (for the 50+ age group). He listened very well, and his mellow, non-threatening demeanor made it easy to talk. He did not seem at all judgmental, and was happy to collaborate on my care. I left very relieved and optimistic.
Dr. Reff is a down to earth, yet professional medical person who gives you many options to contact him. He is aways looking for ways to save money on medications and is helpful with insurance issues.
Exceptionally good appointment, Received great feedback on planning my trip to England for the upcoming academic year. Med management was precise and consistent. One gets the feeling from Dr Reff that he genuinely cares about you as a human being.
I find him totally empathetic, arrogant, and unwilling to engage or consider things from my values. He suggested that I should not concern myself with the feelings of other people in my life and is the most unpalatable mix between Christopher Hitchens and Ayn Rand. He should not be a therapist. He is extremely judgmental about people close to me and their values, and has ignored my own.
Very comfortable to talk with and gives good advice.
Dr. Reff is equal in excellence to my physician in Washington DC Dr Ronald Costell. Both of them are among the finest doctors I have ever seen. Both men are personable, extremely knowledgeable about medicines and therapeutic approaches, and genuinely concerned for my well-being. I'm lucky to have Dr. Reff as a psychiatrist.
if i didnt move i would love you see him agian. he has the experience needed to understand peoples issues. thank you doc. =)
Very comfortable to talk with and understands my treatment.
Excellent doctor! He was extremely helpful in terms of pointing me in the right direction for my step in treatment.
Dr. Reff is probably one of the finest psychiatrists in Chicago. He successfully treated my wife for psychotic depression. He responded to emails, and he adjusted my wife's treatment in response to scholarly journal articles that I showed him. He spent a whole hour with us on the first appointment. My wife is working and cheerful again. I couldn't be more grateful.
My session with Dr. Robert Reff was awful!! I felt as if he didn't care at all!!! Also he diagnosed me after one session!!?? And then said he was going to prescribe me lithium to treat my bipolar and then he tells me he was out of my network and doesn't accept insurance claims until after my session!! And then not even that he didn't even send the prescription to my pharmacy!!! I felt as if I got ripped off and used! I felt more depressed leaving his office than feeling better about the treatment that I would be receiving! He did file a claim with my insurance company as well so I'd like to know why he told me he didn't accept insurance!!!!
Spent a long time looking, have been very happy with my decision.
We chatted. I got to vent about my prescription drug company. Not much can be done.
I was feeling better than usual in part because I had taken one of those 5 hr energy drinks early this morning. Dr Reff informed me that those can be pretty bad news for bipolar people. All in all the visit was very constructive and has helped me in very practical ways.
His ministrations have been conservative in approach which, I believe, allowed him to make a more accurate diagnosis than might otherwise have been made.
Very astute physician. I knew I was in the right place with the right doctor very soon into the first visit. I am confident that with his care and knowledge, I will have a good resolution to my issues.
Dr. Reff is awesome, I look forward to seeing him whenever I schedule an appointment.
Dr. Reff is awesome, he listens to you talk and makes his assessments based on getting to know you. I Highly recommend him!
Great visit, but I need a few more appointments to get a full read. So far, so good though. Ken Blumberg
