About Dr. Robert Sandmeier

Robert Sandmeier, M.D., is a dedicated and interested orthopedic surgeon serving the Portland metropolitan community. Dr. Sandmeier attended the University of New Mexico, where he received his medical degree, and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Vermont. He continued his training by completing a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Utah. Dr. Sandmeier practices at The Portland Clinic. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery and orthopedic sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Sandmeier treats a range of conditions and he is deeply committed to the well-being of his patients. His goal is to help people get back to participating not only in their daily living activities, but also in their athletic and fitness activities. Most of the people he sees don’t need surgery; his most common treatment is to change a patient’s exercise program to address muscles that are too tight or too weak to support their activity. Of the surgeries he does perform, about 90% are related to the knee, the most commonly injured joint in sports. He specializes in knee ligament and meniscus problems, especially anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. He has been named a Top Doctor by Portland Monthly magazine multiple times. Outside of his practice, Dr. Sandmeier enjoys fly fishing, wood and metalworking, and outdoor activities. *Please note that The Portland Clinic maintains a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you need to cancel your appointment within 24 hours of the start time, please contact the practice as soon as possible.

I’ve been dealing with pain in my knee for over a year after a serious injury. I’ve missed 2 mountain bike seasons cause of it. I need answers. I was in the office for less than 5 minutes with Dr. Sandmeier before he concluded what seems to be the problem and left to tell the nurses to print exercises for me. I still had questions. Good thing I was able to change into my pants quickly cause by the time I got out he was grabbing the next patients chart and going over it. I made eye contact with him and asked him a couple more important questions. He literally looked down at the chart and started walking down the hall while answering my questions and went through a door as he finished his answer. Well, guess that’s all the time allotted for me. He must not have given clear instructions cause the nurse didn’t know what to print. Maybe the exercises will cure my ailment (doubt it) but the lack of engagement was insanely unprofessional and downright rude. Now finding a doctor that will care

Amazed that I got an appointment so quickly. Also there was almost no wait time. My record had been reviewed and they seemed to remember me even though I was last seen 5 years ago. Thorough exam and reasonable as well accommodating plan made. Great experience!

very nice doctor. however he was not the type of ortho dr I need: an ortho surgeon. accepts Kaiser but not in a Kaiser facility.
Very nice sign up with zocdoc and timely. The x-ray technician was very helpful and courteous as was the doctor's PA. The doctor was courteous and helpful.
Very gracious and professional. All staff are personable and attentive. Great experience! Will be using him as my orthopedic doctor.

This was my first visit - I was referred by my trainer after experiencing persistent knee pain. I was seen by Dr. Sandmeier, sent downstairs for xrays, and then met with him one more time to review the xray and review the diagnosis and recommendations. All in less than an hour! Dr. Sandmeier and the staff at Portland Clinic were friendly, professional, and efficient.

Dr. Sandmeier gave good info, immediate relief for my injury, and was a straight shooter about the long term effects and what I could expect as I moved into the future. I appreciated his sympathetic, yet direct approach.
Verified patient
He was refreshing, kind and straight to the point with all of the topics explained in a clear way. He was engaging with my daughter and made us both feel comfortable and thoroughly checked out for her knee injury. I appreciated his realistic and down to earth demeanor.
Verified patient
I appreciated his friendly demeanor and straightforward approach to treatment. He also consulted me on another orthopedic question.
Good visit, got all y questions answered.
Verified patient
He was good and very knowledgeable, but I wish we had spent more time on my medical history and knee condition leading up to the reason for the visit. I expect the doc to ask a lot more questions, because I can't remember every single thing I want to report or ask. That seems to be true of most every medical provider these days.
Great visit. Extremely nice and knowledgable.

Almost always great. This time - great
Great, always very attentive HCP & staff.
It was great!!
Dr. Sandmeier first off is a kind, compasionate man who truly cares about your health. He looks for ways to treat that can help long term. He thinks outside of the box and is very knowledgeable. I'm happy to have found someone who takes the time to listen and explain details about the surgery.
