Rosemary Shanahan, NP

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
44 Bristol St, Canandaigua, NY
Caring for others is my passion and life's work. It feels natural to me. However, in my 30-plus years in the medical and mental health fields, traditional medical treatments don't always feel natural. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with a Master's degree from St. John Fisher University and a Bachelor's from Saint Mary's College, I strive to meet my clients' needs by providing integrative care that focuses on treating the mind, body, and spirit. This can be accomplished by taking a holistic approach to wellness rather than simply focusing on medication management. While I am licensed to prescribe medication and recognize the importance of medications in treatment, it is also imperative to address nutrition, vitamin deficiencies, sleep, exercise, and alternative or spiritual practices. This is the way that we can together drastically affect an individual's mental health.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My practice is integrative psychiatry which is based on a holistic approach which incorporates nutrition, genetics, lifestyle, and alternative therapy recommendations as well as medication management. Care is individualized and requires investment of time and effort to achieve optimal results. It is not solely the medication management of symptoms.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session will be time to get to know each other. I will ask several questions about your symptoms, treatment history and goals for treatment. At the end of the initial appointment we will work together to discuss a plan of care that fits your lifestyle and goals. Follow-up appointments will be to gauge your progress toward your goals and to make any changes necessary in treatments.
