Getting to know Dr. Samuel Cross-Sarvis

Dr. Joe is a doctorate-prepared Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner with more than 17 years of experience in patient care. He is dual-certified as both a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C) and a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC). In addition, Joe is a Certified ADHD Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP). Throughout his career, Joe has had the privilege of caring for individuals across all ages and walks of life—addressing both physical and mental health needs through a compassionate, patient-centered approach. His clinical experience includes treating depression, anxiety, ADHD, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and traumatic brain injuries in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Joe specializes in psychiatry-led integrative care, recognizing the strong connection between mental health, physical health, lifestyle, and hormonal balance. He has a particular interest in hormone-informed mental health care for women, including the emotional and cognitive impacts of perimenopause, menopause, reproductive transitions, and endocrine-related conditions. His approach emphasizes evidence-based treatment that considers the whole person—not just symptoms. Joe is passionate about serving diverse communities and has a special interest in supporting the mental health needs of the LGBT+ community. He values creating a safe, affirming, and collaborative environment where patients feel heard, respected, and empowered in their care. Beyond clinical practice, Joe is also an experienced educator who has developed training curricula and delivered lectures for healthcare professionals and interdisciplinary teams. When he’s not caring for patients, Joe enjoys exploring local cuisine, boating on the Columbia River, and spending time with his partner, family, friends, and his three rescued Pitbulls.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I provide compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care that combines medication management, supportive therapy, and psychiatry-led integrative care. My approach recognizes the connection between mental health, physical health, lifestyle, and hormonal balance to support the whole person—not just symptoms. I also have a special interest in hormone-informed mental health care for women, including concerns related to perimenopause, menopause, reproductive transitions, and hormonal changes that can impact mood, anxiety, sleep, and focus. My style is collaborative, conversational, and patient-centered. I’ll work with you to understand your goals, explain your options clearly, and help you feel empowered in your treatment. Sessions often blend supportive therapy with education about mental health, medications, lifestyle strategies, and non-medication approaches so you leave with both insight and practical tools. I know reaching out for help takes courage, and I want you to feel at ease from the very first visit. My goal is to create a supportive, judgment-free space where you feel heard, informed, and actively involved in your care and mental health journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first visit is a chance for us to get to know each other. We’ll spend time talking about your concerns, your history, and your goals for treatment. I’ll ask questions to understand your symptoms, past medical and mental-health history, current medications, and lifestyle factors. This thorough assessment helps me make an accurate diagnosis and create a personalized care plan with you. Follow-up sessions are typically shorter and focus on checking your progress, adjusting medications if needed, and addressing any new issues. Alongside medication management, I often provide brief, evidence-based psychotherapy techniques such as motivational interviewing, behavior change strategies, and mindfulness skills. This means each appointment blends practical guidance with supportive conversation so you feel informed, encouraged, and empowered in your care. My goal is that every session feels collaborative, respectful, and focused on helping you reach your mental-health goals.

I have been a pt. at this practice for many years now. I have had positive interactions every visit. Have zero complaints. Every staff member has been truly helpful!
Dr. Cross is amazing! He is always able to get me in if needed. He always seems ‘present’ during our appointment, like he is really listening and truly cares.
Provider was exceptional with listening to your issues. He did not minimize anything, he did not assume anything and he didn’t question you like an interrogation. This is a stark contrast to the basic care I have been seeking for the last ten years. I would recommend him to everyone that needs his type of care. I’m so appreciative to get the help that I needed.
