Getting to know Dr. Sarah Shah
When originally pursuing medicine, Dr. Shah was drawn to internal medicine and began a residency in it, though psychiatry had always captured her interest and intrigue. She earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Rawalpindi Medical University and completed her residency in psychiatry at Southern Illinois University. For Dr. Shah, psychiatry is a unique field that combines both science and art, which was a driving reason for her to pursue it. What truly finalized her decision, however, was her personal experience witnessing the ongoing stigma surrounding mental health care treatment. While there are many reasons she enjoys psychiatric care today, her continued advocacy for promoting the destigmatization of mental health remains close to her heart. Dr. Shah has a very individualized working style, tailored to the person or patient she is treating and their needs. Working together with the patient, rather than using the sometimes patriarchal method of medicine, is her prime goal. For example, two patients with the same diagnosis do not necessarily require the same treatment approach. She finds this highly collaborative method leads to better patient outcomes overall.

I have always struggled with finding the right psychiatrist which is why I was hesitant to book an appointment with anyone. Based on the reviews that I saw for Dr, Shah, I decided I would give her a try and it was honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. From the beginning to the very end of my appointment, she was absolutely amazing. She asked questions to get to know me and listened to everything I said. She was extremely attentive and made the whole session very comfortable. Instead of being like most psychiatrist I've seen in the past who spend 20 minutes with you and prescribe a bunch of medications, she actually gave me multiple medication options and went into detail explaining the medications as well. She also explained the treatment plans that we will be exploring in future appointments. I highly recommend anyone who is struggling to book an appointment with her, you will NOT be disappointed.

Dr. Shah was super nice, knowledgeable and so empathetic. She walked me through different medication options and explained each one- how it works, side effects, pros and cons. She also asked a lot of questions to understand my situation better. Overall it was a really great experience.
