“I was pleasantly surprised by my initial meeting with Dr. Serena Wu. I have not had the best luck with past psychiatrists. Dr. Wu was on time, patient (I never felt rushed), took a thorough history from me, answered all of my questions, and was very clear in explaining medication options. She also did not push anything on me. I feel as though I am in good hands working with her. She is also accessible, as I needed to communicate with her shortly after our meeting and she responded quickly. I would definitely recommend her. ”

Getting to know Dr. Serena Wu

Welcome to my Psych Practice! I am a board-certified psychiatrist and family physician. I completed medical school at Drexel University in Philadelphia, and moved back to California to do residency at the University of California Davis. I've spent my career doing community mental health in both acute and outpatient settings and I bring all of that experience to my private practice. Alongside my private practice, I am also faculty and Behavioral Health Curriculum Director at Lifelong Medical's Family Medicine Residency Program where I teach and mentor both residents and medical students from bay area medical schools and residencies, including UCSF, Stanford, UC Davis and Tuoro. I also lecture and am also a voluntary clinical professor at UCSF. Treatment Philosophy I believe in the thoughtful use of psychiatric medications grounded in the best available evidence based principles. I use a combination of medications and therapeutic modalities to help each client achieve their mental health goals. I look at environmental, social, psychological, and biological forces and use this holistic view when collaborating on a course of treatment for an individual. Although I do incorporate psychodynamic and attachment principles into my sessions, I do not provide long term therapy and will refer patients to therapists if needed. PERSONAL INTERESTS I take full advantage of the Bay Area's awesome weather and spend most of my free time camping/hiking both with family and with my two dogs. I think being able to practice mindfulness and meditation in nature has helped me grow in my practice as a psychiatrist.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My intakes are all via telehealth but follow ups are usually a hybrid of in person and telehealth depending on individual need. *** Please note that if I am prescribing stimulants or benzodiazepines to you I will need to eventually see you in person per FDA regulation. ***

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Please expect a call and email within 24 hours of booking your appointment. The email will have TelePsych login directions as well as directions on how to sign up for my patient portal. I use Doxy - a HIPPA compliant tele platform that's commonly used by psychiatrists and therapists.
