Dr. Shilpa Thayyullathil is a psychiatrist from New Jersey who has practiced for over 10 years in New York State. The daughter of a geriatric physician, she credits her father with her early interest in medicine and passion for science. These influences led her to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Biology at Oberlin College, followed by a Medical Degree from St. George University School of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Psychiatry at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.
As an attending psychiatrist, Dr. Thayyullathil has worked primarily in outpatient settings. Demographics have included people with chronic mental health disorders, living with HIV and AIDS, a history of homelessness, and substance use disorders. She has provided lectures on various topics such as assessing and managing the residual symptoms of depression, pregnancy and psychotropic medications, suicide, verbal de-escalation, and the management of agitated patients with psychotropic medications.
Working with 9/11 survivors for the past few years, she has developed a strong interest in incorporating alternative treatments such as nutrition, yoga, and therapeutic techniques with traditional psychotropic medications in the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. In addition to PTSD, her areas of expertise include adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression. Dr. Thayyullathil takes a minimalistic approach to prescribing psychotropic medications, while encouraging the use of supportive/talk therapy and alternative treatments to maximize one's success in their path to recovery.
