Getting to know Dr. Steven Hertler

I am a New York and New Jersey licensed psychologist specializing in assessment, testing, and diagnostics. I served as an examining psychologist for Morristown Memorial Hospital and for Newark Beth Israel's Children's Hospital of New Jersey, working for the following three grant-funded programs: Child Hospital Assessment and Treatment Team (CHATT), Child Evaluation Center (CHEC), and Regional Diagnostic and Treatment Team (RDTC). I was also a district psychologist for East Newark Public Schools and the head of psychological assessment at Specialized Therapy Associates. In 2012, I started my private practice, Psychodiagnostics, and have since seen more than 1,200 patients. My motivation was to provide fuller and more customized assessment batteries that genuinely answered referral questions. In 2021, I was appointed as an assistant professor of psychology at Saint Elizabeth University, where I teach research methods, personality, and biopsychology at the undergraduate level and psychometrics, advanced psychological testing, and physiological psychology at the doctoral level. I am also extremely interested in personality variation and personality disorders, and have authored or coauthored more than ten peer reviewed paper on that topic. Other research publications have centered on political ideology, adverse childhood experiences, identity, and evolution.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Psychological Assessment is what I study, practice, research and teach. Psychodiagnostics, my practice based in Northern New Jersey, exclusively evaluates and explains, diagnoses and describes. Assessments assemble upwards of twenty standardized, computerized, and objective tests into customized batteries designed to answer referral questions, discriminate among disorders and provide descriptions of persons and problems. Common evaluations include: Independent child study team evaluations, dyslexia and related learning disability assessments, data-driven rule-outs for ADHD, Intelligence (IQ) testing, administration of neuropsychological tests, autism and related developmental assessments, competency and guardianship evaluations, accommodations related evaluations for the PSAT/SAT/GRE/LSAT/MCAT, mental health and personality assessment.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Unlike other practices, I schedule single sessions, starting and finishing assessments in one appointment. The process begins with interviewing where patients discuss themselves, their history, and their presenting problems. Thereafter, all forms, ratings, and assessments are completed. Unlike other practices, reports are often completed within a 72-hour window. These reports contain a minimum of copy and pasted text, meaning they are largely written from the ground up for each patient. These are not autogenerated or standing documents, but rather unique expressions of my clinical impressions. Unlike other practices, I do not delegate any part of this process to interns or employees. I take histories, conduct all assessments, review all records, and write all reports, which facilitates the integration of sources of information, such as behavioral observations, past records, symptom ratings, cognitive data and so on.
