Getting to know Dr. Sumit Anand

***PLEASE NOTE DR. ANAND CAN ONLY CONFIRM YOUR APPOINTMENT AFTER HE HAS SPOKEN WITH YOU FIRST** (you will receive a callback from him the same day you choose a time slot). This will be a refreshing alternative for you! I am frequently referred patients who feel misdiagnosed or inadequately treated. I am an educator and write academic papers. Please feel free to consult with me for your psychiatric and psychological needs. I will provide an in-depth evaluation and explanation. I always provide electronic superbills that can be submitted to your insurance for reimbursement of out-of-network benefits. For me, the patient (not paperwork) comes FIRST, and I will use my decades of academic and clinical experience to come to an ACCURATE diagnosis (or diagnoses) and, more importantly, a PRACTICAL treatment plan to help you function at your best! I have over thirty years’ experience as a physician and over twenty years as a psychiatrist. I have successfully treated hundreds of patients, helping them recover and thrive. I have specific clinical experience treating all anxiety disorders, ADHD (including comorbid cases), Major Depressive Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, OCD, sexually compulsive behaviors, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and anger problems. With specialized training, I have written numerous in-depth court reports and second-opinion consultations to help those seeking accurate mental health diagnoses. I graduated from King’s College London GKT School of Medicine with a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. I completed my residency in General Psychiatry and a fellowship in Forensic Psychiatry at the University of Virginia. I have published extensively in academic journals and spoken at conferences on topics ranging from anger to the shortcomings of the DSM. I would welcome the opportunity to meet your mental health needs!

What should a new client know about working with you?

*****PLEASE NOTE DR.ANAND CAN ONLY CONFIRM YOUR APPT AFTER HE HAS SPOKEN TO YOU FIRST*****(you will receive a call back from him the same day you choose a time slot)/ I have a very conversational style. For me, the 'story' is as important as the symptoms. That helps give me a better context from which to make an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan. That's why I TAKE TIME for all my appointments. I deliberately do not overschedule patients, so that the patient feels heard, That allows for a meaningful connection that is not interfered with by the 'busyness' of scheduling. I actively ask for my patient's involvement in their treatment, and recovery, with the aim being to allow the patient to grow from a place of crisis and despair to empowerment and actualizing their life goals. I make a special effort to work with therapists and families, so that we can work as a team. This can really help a patient's recovery be that much faster, as they can feel properly supported all the way in their recovery journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I regularly take 1 1/2 -2 hours for my new patient appointments. I always see my new patient in person. I inform them that entire morning is for them. This allows for their 'story' to properly unfold. By the time they come to see me, most patients can be frustrated with their symptoms and 'the system.' I try to be the very antidote to that lived experience. During that time, I ask for their help in detailing what did and what didn't work for them in the past, the actual impact of their symptoms on their functioning, and what their subjective distress looks like. That way, I can tailor the medication strategy to focus on their most troubling concerns first. I always electronically prescribe at the time of the appointment, so the medication agreed-to is already at the pharmacy at the end of the appointment. (One less thing to worry about!) I will then outline what to expect, how to contact me in between appointments, and the importance of concurrent therapy in helping to build life skills for future stressors. ALL my appointments include a psychotherapeutic component, in that supporting, educating and reflecting back to the patient are all established psychotherapy tools. MY patients tell me that they always appreciate that about me. Though I am not their therapist, I emphasize that, in the long term. therapy is actually AS, if not MORE, important than medications, as oftentimes, coping style may need more consistent work and practice in order to break their cycle of despair. That is why I encourage patients to learn about their disorders, coping style and symptom, where I practically explain the BASICS of disorders and treatment APPROACHES. That is why I regularly discourage patients from 'googling' their disorder, as information overload will likely worsen their anxieties, without any explanation leaving them as lost as before. I have always believed that 'explanation' is far more important than mere 'information..'
