Getting to know Dr. Syed Naqvi
Dr. Syed Naqvi is a board-certified psychiatrist with more than 25 years of experience treating adults with psychiatric and substance use disorders. He completed fellowship training in Addiction Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School after completing his psychiatry residency at Yale University School of Medicine.
Dr. Naqvi provides comprehensive adult psychiatric care and specializes in addiction psychiatry. He treats opioid, alcohol, cannabis, benzodiazepine, stimulant, nicotine and other substance use disorders, as well as depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and patients experiencing both psychiatric and substance use conditions.
Treatment may include psychiatric medication management, smoking cessation treatment, and medications for substance use disorders, including buprenorphine (Suboxone) for opioid use disorder when clinically appropriate. Dr. Naqvi has extensive experience with buprenorphine treatment and has taught hundreds of physicians about its use in treating opioid dependence.
In addition to his private practice at Laurel Behavioral Health, Dr. Naqvi serves as an attending psychiatrist and Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Saint Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, DC, where he is involved in teaching physicians and medical students.

What should a new client know about working with you?
Seeking psychiatric or addiction treatment can be a difficult decision, particularly for patients who have struggled with substance use or have had difficulty finding the right treatment in the past. My goal is to provide a respectful, confidential and nonjudgmental environment where patients can speak openly about their concerns.
I treat each patient as an individual rather than approaching treatment with a one-size-fits-all plan. I work with adults experiencing a wide range of psychiatric conditions, substance use disorders, or both. We will discuss your symptoms, treatment history, medications and goals and determine which treatment options are appropriate for you.
Medication can be an important part of treatment, but prescribing a medication is not the entire purpose of an appointment. I want my patients to understand their condition, their treatment options and why a particular approach is being recommended.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
Your first appointment begins with a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. I will review your current concerns, medical and psychiatric history, previous diagnoses and treatments, current and past medications and, when relevant, your substance use and recovery history.
We will discuss potential diagnoses and treatment options and develop an individualized treatment plan. Depending on your needs, treatment may include psychiatric medication management, treatment for smoking cessation, or medications for substance use disorders, including buprenorphine (Suboxone) for opioid use disorder when clinically appropriate.
Follow-up appointments are used to evaluate your progress, medication effectiveness and side effects, address new concerns and adjust treatment when necessary. Long-term treatment and follow-up frequency are individualized based on your condition and clinical needs.
