Getting to know Thomas Dietz

NOTE TO PATIENTS: Due to Texas Scope of Practice laws for nurse practitioners, I am unable to provide prescriptions for schedule II controlled substances. This includes stimulant medications such as Adderall, Ritalin, Vyvanse, and others. As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner with a Master’s in Nursing from the University of Texas, San Antonio, I am committed to providing compassionate and comprehensive care to patients with mental health issues. My goal is to help patients achieve optimal mental health and well-being by delivering evidence-based care tailored to their individual needs. I believe mental health is an essential component of overall health, and I am dedicated to promoting mental health awareness and reducing the stigma associated with mental illness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I use a holistic approach to practicing psychiatry. This involves taking into account all aspects of your life in order to develop the optimal treatment plan. This typically involves a combination of medications and life style modifications. I am light handed with medications and in most circumstances view them as a way to aid you in accomplishing your goals, versus viewing medications as the "cure" for your issues. I am a big believer in therapy and often utilize concepts of several therapy modalities in my treatment approach. I strive to offer a unique experience for you where you will feel fully listened to and understood without fear of judgement. I understand that everyone is their own individual person with their own unique set of issues. My approach is to focus in on who you are as an individual in order to figure out an approach that improves your mental health. Whatever type of treatment plan we come up with I always make sure that you were involved in creating it, and that you fully understand the risks and benefits of the medication you are prescribed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

You first visit is 1 hour long as more time is needed to get to know you. This visit consists of a guided conversation that helps me understand your mental health and how it plays into the context of your life. Most of the questions that are asked are pretty basic and provide a framework of understanding on how you live your life. Other questions are more personal and may dredge up old memories that are uncomfortable. I utilize a very slow approach and will never push you into discussing things you are not comfortable saying. Once I feel like I understand you as an individual we will move onto the diagnosis and treatment phase of the visit. Before we jump into that though I will always ask you if you have any questions so far, and if there is anything you would like to add that we did not talk about. I'll explain what diagnosis I came to and describe what it means, and how I came to that conclusion. Before going into the treatment I will answer any questions you may have about the diagnosis. For the treatment plan I stick with evidence based choices, so that you can feel comfortable knowing research supports the medication we are choosing. In psychiatry there tends to be several medications per each diagnosis that are considered first line treatments. I will explain each one of them to you, then recommend which one I think would be best. From there I want your input as to which one you believe would fit you best, and we will finalize the treatment plan together.
