Valerie Ruberto, APN

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
410 Ramapo Valley Rd, Ste 203B, Oakland, NJ
Many people come to psychiatry after feeling frustrated by treatments that haven't worked or appointments that felt rushed. I became a psychiatric provider because I enjoy helping people understand their symptoms and find treatment approaches that genuinely fit their needs. Before becoming a PMHNP, I received a B.S. in Clinical Psychology from Tufts University and worked in psychiatric research focused on bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression. Today, I provide collaborative, individualized care to patients experiencing depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, ADHD, and more.

What should a new client know about working with you?

One thing patients quickly notice about me is that I'm highly responsive. I make it a priority to return texts, emails, and patient portal messages within 24 business hours, often much sooner. I also understand that mental health concerns don't always arise during traditional office hours, which is why I offer flexible scheduling, including evening, late-night, weekend, in-person, and telehealth appointments. My goal is to make it as easy as possible for patients to access care when they need it.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I believe psychiatric care works best when it is collaborative, thoughtful, and individualized. My first priority is understanding the full picture, including your symptoms, history, goals, strengths, and the unique circumstances that make you who you are. Together, we'll develop a treatment plan that fits your needs, whether that involves medication, psychotherapy techniques, lifestyle changes, or a combination of approaches. My goal is for every patient to feel heard, respected, informed, and actively involved in their care. During our first appointment, I'll take the time to understand the full picture—not just your symptoms, but your experiences, strengths, goals, and the factors that may be affecting your mental health. We'll discuss what's been working, what hasn't, and what you'd like to accomplish through treatment. I encourage questions and believe patients should be active participants in decisions about their care. By the end of the session, we'll have a shared understanding of the challenges you're facing and a plan for addressing them.
