Getting to know Dr. Vanessa Li
I offer Telehealth via a confidential and safe video conferencing platform, as well as in-person sessions.
With over 10 years of experience working with clients, I view psychotherapy as a respectful and collaborative journey where I share my expertise to help navigate life's roadblocks. I am humbled that together we decide which signposts to follow, guiding clients toward more fulfilling and joyful lives.
My approach to psychotherapy is three-fold. First, I personalize therapy based on each client's priorities and situation. Second, I draw from various evidence-based theories, including psychodynamic, accelerated experiential dynamic psychotherapy (AEDP), cognitive behavioral (CBT), dialectical behavioral (DBT), and mindfulness modalities, among others. Third, I value flexibility, openness, and authentic feedback within a safe and secure professional relationship that develops over time.
My experience and interests include working with anxiety, self-doubt, procrastination, negative intrusive thoughts, life transitions, and various relationship difficulties. I also often incorporate executive coaching tools for professionals facing career and workplace challenges.
Raised in Hong Kong and England, I am bilingual in English and Chinese, and these early experiences have made me especially sensitive to bicultural issues. I completed my clinical internship at Bellevue Hospital Center in New York City, one of the most challenging training environments.
I hold a PhD in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University. I am involved in research activities and have published papers in renowned journals such as the Journal of Clinical Psychology and the APA Handbook of the Psychology of Women. My commitment to advocating against and dispelling mental health stigma remains at the forefront of my clinical research.

Dr. Li is my 1st psychologist. She kept my head above the water when I was drown. She never pushed me and has recommended different ways that I can actually use in real life to make myself more emotionally stable. She is the best.

I have been seeing Vanessa for a few years now via remote access. She has been always flexible with my time and has been accommodating with changes in my work and personal schedule in order for us to have consistent sessions. She has been able to help me a great deal managing my anxiety. She pushes but doesn’t over step especially when it comes to managing my symptoms with medication. She is professional and takes good notes as evidence by being able to circle back to previous conversations. I would highly recommend her.

I started working with Dr. Li in late 2020 – four years later, the amount of change that has happened in my life, mental health, and mindset is astronomical. I was very suspicious of therapy when I started, particularly given previous experiences with other therapists. Dr. Li is truly one of a kind – she was patient, kind, and really broke down my barriers. I came in to work on my graduate school anxiety – I have ended up addressing my own self-worth, intergenerational trauma, and AANPHI-specific family issues that I never would have imagined being able to tackle. I have the tools now to calm my anxiety, process my emotions, and live my life mindfully. Most days, I am happy – which given where I mentally was in fall 2020, is shocking. Even more, I’m a better person to my loved ones. I cannot recommend Dr. Li enough. If you’ve just started working with her – trust the process! You will grow so, so much.

I began seeing Dr. Li at the start of 2022 to address depression and anxiety stemming from family issues and menopause. I constantly felt overwhelmed and struggled with sleep.
Dr. Li has shown remarkable patience in listening to my concerns. She provided various methods to manage negative emotions, encouraged me to be honest about my feelings, and guided me toward self-love and self-worth.
I am in a much better place now. Although my external circumstances remain unchanged, I've shifted my mindset, expressing gratitude for what I have and distancing myself from toxic people and situations. I've also gained a deeper understanding of emotions, learning to let go and embrace joy.
Dr. Li is not only helpful, patient, and professional but also exceptionally kind. She has truly transformed my mindset and, consequently, my life.

Vanessa and I have been working together for 3.5 years. She has helped me through my acceptance and healing journey. She helped diagnose me with PTSD and severe anxiety disorder. She got me connected with my Psychiatrist. She helps me with my day to day symptom management and with my big life decisions. I strongly recommend you give her practice a shot. I went from crying because I did not get my pump of pumpkin in my coffee and Covid depression to now planning my wedding with my best friend and started my own voice business. It only takes one step. Dr. Li is an amazing therapist. She creates a safe, empathetic, and non judgemental space, and gave me the guidance and support I needed to work through some hard times. She's very experienced, and has shared lots of tools and exercises that have allowed me to continue my healing outside of our sessions, and grow as a person. Dr. Li is truly the gift that keeps on giving. I started working with her in the aftermath of covid, when I had no idea how to regulate myself and didn’t even know what I was necessarily struggling with. She helped me build awareness of my emotions and of my body- emphasising the mind-body connection. She forces me to think about deeper existential questions while also helping me with everyday challenges. The skills she has taught me have truly been life changing - I find myself being more resilient, more present, more appreciative and grateful ever since I started working with her. I went through an especially rough patch earlier in the year - when a lot of awful things happened simultaneously. I truly believe that her advice and counsel were what enabled me to navigate those events and allowed me to weather them with strength and courage. Bottom line: she knows what she’s doing and she’s amazing at it. I have learned so much and experience the world with so much more wonder and awe now! I’m always excited to keep learning from her too.

I started sessions with Dr. Li when I was going through an unprecedentedly low time in my life. She’s the first therapist I worked with and I have never looked back. Dr. Li gave me the empowerment and support I needed to face my life problems through a different lens. On top of that, she also helped me with the journey to discovering my life values so I can be happier and more confident as an individual. I have been meeting with Dr. Li for some time and can highly recommend her to anyone interested in receiving therapy. Admittedly, I was a bit of a skeptic coming into the consultations, but I was proven wrong fairly quickly. I was going through a tough time when I had first met her and she was able to help me identify my current issues and work through them together. In addition, she helped me recognize certain characteristics I may have developed over my life and brought clarity around them. Moreover, she approached all our conversations with empathy and made sure there were not any negative connotations around my "problems". Lastly, I want to share that she provides support and empowerment. Our sessions are effective and practical, we address topics and we come up with pragmatic steps towards a resolution. I am of the belief that everyone can gain from therapy sessions and that there should not be a negative stigma around receiving consultations. If you are on the fence about receiving treatment, I highly encourage you to do so.

Dr. Li has been an incredible support for helping me get closer to the person I want to be and helping me become a better version of myself. She has worked with me to recognize any negative thinking, which I did not realize I was doing before, and the skills I've learned with her have helped me become a less impulsive individual at work, in my relationship, and in general. Being an international student studying in the US, I didn’t expect my therapist to understand the intensity of the struggles I am facing but Dr.Li was super comprehensive and I felt heard and understood which was something I was looking for. She also took several efforts to help me out of the situations I have been in. She has been super understanding and accommodating of my unpredictable schedule. All words fall short when I begin to express my gratitude towards Dr.Li, I would recommend her a 100% to anyone seeking therapy especially the first timers because she is everything you have been looking for!

I approached her when I was going through relationship issue and anxiety. As a person she is sweetest and as a doctor she is very understanding. She walked me through each and every situation and provided me with logical reasoning which I could very well connect to. Dr. Li was recommended to me by a friend of mine, who also sees her. I didn't click with my first therapist, and very overwhelmed with the options out there -- so I am very grateful that my friend recommended Dr. Li! I've also recommended Dr. Li to a couple friends looking for a therapist.
I've been seeing Dr Li for a year now, and have seen huge strides in my progress. In our sessions, she works to provide tools for me to tackle certain negative thoughts I have, understand that not everyone is "out to get me", and helping me to rewrite the narrative of my past that's holding me back. In seeing her, I have become more empathetic, less judgmental, and less anxious overall. I'm getting better at communicating my feelings and being more present in life -- it's really helping improving my relationships across the board!

Dr. Li was so great. I received a call back as soon as I put in inquiry in, we had a phone consolidation then met in person. She let me speak, listened and gave me great advice. I visited with her for almost a year and every session I would leave feeling refreshed. I do feel like a different person now then before I started. I would highly recommend Dr. Li to anyone but especially to millennials in their “quarter life crisis,” phase.
