About Dr. Varun Kumar

I am extremely excited to be a part of the Optum team as a gastroenterologist and hepatologist. I grew up in Queens, NY and have lived in Dutchess county the past few years after completing my medical training in New Haven, CT. I take great pride in using empathy as a powerful tool for getting to know and treat my patients. It is important for me to take the time to get to know each individual so that I can truly appreciate how their medical illness prevents them from living the life they desire, and to tailor my workup and treatment plans accordingly. I hope to utilize the knowledge that I have learned from taking care of extremely complex patients at Yale-New Haven Hospital to provide the highest quality care to my patients at Optum. My special interests within the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology include Colon Cancer screening and prevention, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Gut Microbiome Dysbiosis, Clostridium difficile treatment, Esophageal and swallowing disorders, Liver disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Endoscopic Procedures.
