Virginia Rubio, MSN

Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
2030 Main St, Ste # 1300, Irvine, CA
I'm Virginia Rubio, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner providing telehealth care to adults across California. Before becoming a nurse practitioner, I spent more than a decade as a registered nurse — in hospital medical and telemetry units, in a state psychiatric hospital, and in correctional and juvenile health settings. Those years taught me that mental health rarely shows up in isolation, and that the people who need care most are often the ones who feel least heard. My medical background shapes how I practice. I see the mind and body as inseparable, so I start by ruling out physical contributors to psychiatric symptoms — thyroid imbalance, inflammation, sleep disruption, medication side effects — before assuming a diagnosis explains everything. Understanding what is actually driving your symptoms is what makes an individualized plan possible. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, and sleep difficulties, and I have a particular interest in women's mental health, including perinatal concerns and major life transitions. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, and I welcome patients who feel more at home in either language. My approach combines thoughtful medication management with therapeutic work — cognitive behavioral strategies, supportive therapy, mindfulness, and practical guidance on sleep, nutrition, and movement. Medication can be a valuable tool, but it is one part of a bigger picture, never the whole plan. Mental health care is not one-size-fits-all. What works for one person may not work for you, and finding the right combination takes time, honesty, and collaboration. My goal is that you leave each visit feeling understood, clearer about what is happening, and with a next step that feels doable. I am currently accepting new patients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You'll do most of the talking at first, and I'll do most of the listening. My goal in the beginning is to understand your story — what you're experiencing, what you've already tried, what helped and what didn't — before I recommend anything. I practice collaboratively. I'll explain my reasoning, walk you through the options, and tell you honestly what I think, but the plan is one we build together. If something doesn't sit right with you, I want to hear it, because a plan you don't believe in isn't a plan that will work. I take an integrative view. Alongside medication, we'll talk about sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, and the support around you. Where it's appropriate, I may discuss evidence-based options that complement conventional treatment rather than replace it, and I'll always be clear about what the evidence does and doesn't support. I ask that you tell me about anything you're already taking so we can keep your care coordinated and safe. I'm bilingual in English and Spanish, and all visits are by secure video, so you can be seen from wherever you're comfortable in California. You won't be rushed, and you won't be judged. Progress is rarely a straight line, and uneven weeks are part of the process, not a failure.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We'll go through your current symptoms, your history, your medical background, any medications or supplements you're taking, your sleep, and the day-to-day context you're living in. Because of my medical training, I also look for physical contributors — thyroid, vitamin levels, sleep disruption, medication interactions — and I'll order labs or coordinate with your primary care provider when it's warranted. By the end of that first visit, you'll have my honest impression of what's going on and a proposed starting plan, including what I'd expect to improve and roughly when. Follow-up visits are shorter and scheduled more closely at first, often every two to four weeks while we're starting or adjusting a medication, then spaced out as things stabilize. In those visits we review how you're responding, address any side effects, and work on the non-medication side: coping strategies, behavioral activation, sleep routines, and one or two specific habits tied to what matters to you. I use motivational interviewing rather than pressure, and we set goals small enough to actually accomplish. If you'd benefit from ongoing therapy alongside our work, I'll help connect you with a therapist and coordinate care. And if your needs fall outside what telehealth psychiatry can safely address, I'll tell you directly and help you find the right level of care.
