Getting to know Virginia Rubio

I believe good psychiatric care starts with being truly heard. I’m Virginia, a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner caring for adults across California through telehealth, in English or Spanish. Before becoming an NP, I spent more than a decade as a registered nurse in hospital medical units, a state psychiatric hospital, and correctional and juvenile health settings. Those years showed me that the people who need care most often feel the least listened to, and that has shaped how I practice. My medical background means I see the mind and body as deeply connected. Before assuming a diagnosis explains everything, I look at physical factors like thyroid imbalance, inflammation, sleep disruption, and medication side effects. Understanding what is driving your symptoms helps us build a plan that fits you. I work with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, mood disorders, and sleep difficulties, and I have a special interest in women’s mental health, including perinatal concerns and major life transitions. My approach combines thoughtful medication management with therapeutic support: cognitive behavioral strategies, supportive therapy, mindfulness, and practical guidance on sleep, nutrition, and movement. Medication can be a valuable tool, but it is one part of a bigger picture. Finding what works takes time, honesty, and collaboration, and we will work through it together. My hope is that you leave each visit feeling understood, clearer about what is happening, and with a next step that feels manageable. I am currently accepting new patients.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I want to understand your story: what you’re going through, what you’ve already tried, and what has or hasn’t helped. In our first visits, you’ll do most of the talking and I’ll do most of the listening. Only then will I recommend anything. I see our work as a partnership. I’ll explain my thinking, walk you through your options, and give you my honest opinion, but the plan is one we shape together. If something doesn’t feel right, please tell me. A plan you believe in is far more likely to help than one you don’t. I look at the whole person, not just symptoms. Alongside medication, we’ll talk about sleep, nutrition, movement, stress, and the people and support in your life. When it makes sense, I may also discuss evidence-based options that complement conventional treatment, and I’ll always be clear about what the research does and doesn’t show. Please let me know about anything you’re already taking, including supplements, so we can keep your care safe and coordinated. I’m bilingual in English and Spanish, and all visits are by secure video, so you can meet with me from home or wherever you feel most comfortable in California. You won’t be rushed, and you won’t be judged. Healing is rarely a straight line. Harder weeks are a normal part of the process, not a sign that you’ve failed, and we’ll keep moving forward together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. We'll go through your current symptoms, your history, your medical background, any medications or supplements you're taking, your sleep, and the day-to-day context you're living in. Because of my medical training, I also look for physical contributors — thyroid, vitamin levels, sleep disruption, medication interactions — and I'll order labs or coordinate with your primary care provider when it's warranted. By the end of that first visit, you'll have my honest impression of what's going on and a proposed starting plan, including what I'd expect to improve and roughly when. Follow-up visits are shorter and scheduled more closely at first, often every two to four weeks while we're starting or adjusting a medication, then spaced out as things stabilize. In those visits we review how you're responding, address any side effects, and work on the non-medication side: coping strategies, behavioral activation, sleep routines, and one or two specific habits tied to what matters to you. I use motivational interviewing rather than pressure, and we set goals small enough to actually accomplish. If you'd benefit from ongoing therapy alongside our work, I'll help connect you with a therapist and coordinate care. And if your needs fall outside what telehealth psychiatry can safely address, I'll tell you directly and help you find the right level of care.
