My name is Vivan Akabueze, Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified. I believe in patient-centered care, focusing on my patient's history, strengths, values, beliefs, and so on, not just to inform decisions on their diagnosis and treatment but to help and guide them to live the life they hope to.
My approach
My approach to providing mental healthcare is based on a patient-centered, collaborative care model that involves patient engagement; holistic assessment; regular monitoring of medication effectiveness, side effects, and symptom changes for necessary treatment plan adjustment; collaboration with other healthcare providers for comprehensive support, to improve my patient's outcome, give them a voice in their treatment decisions and address their complex needs.
My focus
I work with individuals with psychiatric mental health conditions across their lifespan - treating most disorders such as major depressive disorder, postpartum depression, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, separation anxiety, adjustment disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit hyperactive disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorder, Bipolar, schizophrenia, management of autism, intellectual disorder, and many others.
My communication style
I believe in a patient-centered empathetic approach to communication style, utilizing active listening, asking questions that encourage detailed responses, and allowing my patients to explain their thoughts and feelings properly. I believe in a non-judgmental attitude; I address my patients by their preferred names and respect their boundaries. I consider cultural differences, adapt to my patients' level of understanding, and establish a trusting relationship with my patients. In essence, I connect with my patients on all ramifications.
