Getting to know Wilson Smith

Finding the right mental health provider shouldn't be stressful. With over 20 years in mental health and 15+ years working with children and adolescents, I provide compassionate, individualized care for ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders, bipolar disorder, addiction, and behavioral concerns. My patients value having time to talk, feeling genuinely heard, and receiving consistent, accessible care. Together, we'll develop a personalized treatment plan that supports your goals and helps you or your loved one move forward with confidence. I combine thoughtful medication management with brief CBT- and REBT-informed therapy to help you build practical skills for lasting change. While medication can be an important tool, my goal is to help you move beyond reliance on medication alone by addressing thoughts, behaviors, and coping strategies that support long-term wellness. If you're feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, or stuck, you don't have to face it alone. Whether you're seeking help for yourself or a loved one, I offer a supportive, judgment-free space where you'll be heard and understood. Taking the first step can be hard, but I'm here to help. Reach out to get started.

What should a new client know about working with you?

At The Mooring Point, you will work directly with Wilson Smith, DNP, PMHNP. Wilson believes that effective mental health care begins with listening to the patient and understanding the person behind the diagnosis. His approach emphasizes individualized treatment, collaboration, and making care accessible and responsive to each patient's unique needs and goals. Wilson holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree and brings more than 20 years of experience in the mental health field. For more than 15 years, he worked directly with children and adolescents in delinquency and child welfare settings, experiences that provided a broad understanding of the behavioral, emotional, family, and environmental factors that can influence mental health. His clinical philosophy is that medication can be an important part of treatment, but it does not always have to be the only part. When appropriate, medication management may be combined with brief therapy, including approaches based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Wilson has received training in CBT and REBT through the Albert Ellis Institute and incorporates these principles into his approach to help patients develop practical skills for managing thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Most importantly, Wilson believes that patients should be heard. Your experiences with mental health and healthcare, including what has worked, what has not worked, and how you have been treated in the past, are important considerations in developing your care. The goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to work collaboratively toward meaningful, lasting changes that support long-term success. As a small, independent practice, The Mooring Point is intentionally different from larger healthcare systems. The focus is on providing personalized care, taking the time to understand each patient, and developing a treatment plan that reflects the individual rather than simply treating a diagnosis.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

At The Mooring Point, we believe that effective treatment begins with understanding the whole person—not simply identifying a diagnosis or prescribing medication. The initial appointment is a comprehensive opportunity to learn about your medical history, current and past medications, psychiatric history, family history, and previous experiences with healthcare and mental health treatment. While the intake covers many important areas, an equally important part of the process is understanding your experience. We want to hear what has brought you to treatment, what has and has not worked in the past, what concerns are most important to you, and what you hope to accomplish through treatment. Your perspective and experiences play a significant role in every part of the assessment and treatment-planning process. Together, we will identify the issues that are having the greatest impact on your life and establish individualized goals for treatment. Rather than trying to address everything at once, we work to identify the most prominent concerns and develop a plan to address each one thoughtfully and individually. The goal of the initial appointment is to leave with a clearer understanding of what you are experiencing, what you want to change, and how we can work together to move toward lasting improvement. Your treatment should be a collaborative process, and your voice is an essential part of it.
