Dr. Yaser El-Gazzar, MD

Orthopedic Surgeon, Sports Medicine Specialist

Professional statement

Yaser El-Gazzar, MD is a Board Eligible, orthopedic surgeon with specialty interests in joint preservation, adult & pediatric sports medicine, and trauma. He completed his undergraduate education at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, Medical education at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Albert Einstein Medical College/ Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx. He completed his training by undergoing a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the prestigious Jack Hughston Foundation in Georgia under the mentorship of Champ Baker, JR, MD where he was involved in the care of NCAA, professional, high school, and “weekend warrior” athletes. Since then, he has become team physician for Berkeley College athletics. He is also involved in the care of many neighboring Hudson County high schools including Weehawken and Union city High Schools. Dr. El-Gazzar’s life experiences give him a unique advantage as a physician: “I have undergone 7 major surgeries in my lifetime. I developed a unique endocrine tumor, called a pheochromacytoma, which secreted adrenaline at the age of 13 years old. It took 7 open abdominal exploratory surgeries to remove the recurring tumors, supplemented with nuclear and chemotherapy to be cured, the last surgery being in 2011. Each surgery was accompanied by fear and anxiety, followed by intense pain and rehab. I know what it means to be scared to the point that it takes over all of your senses as you are being told that you should undergo a major procedure. The uncertainty of what is actually being done to you and what the outcome will be can feel suffocating. You have a life, plans, and goals that now fall out of focus. I believe that understanding this process first hand has given me the advantage and ability to communicate with patients and help them truly understand the diagnosis, treatment options, and most importantly, the road to rehabilitation and returning to everyday life. I have had many negative experiences with surgeons who did not explain things to me, were short and abrupt with me, and made me feel that they really didn’t care. My life’s and professional career’s mission is to never make a patient feel the way I did.” “I believe that joint preservation is the future of orthopedic surgery. Damage to the cartilaginous surfaces of joints does not repair itself in adults. The inability of the human body to regenerate or repair joint surface cartilage continues to be a modern day mystery. Damage to cartilage surfaces can occur via two main mechanisms: There is the wear that comes with age, commonly known as degenerative arthritis or osteoarthritis and there is the damage that occurs as a result of a traumatic event or during sports. As we strive to become more active and live healthier, it is inevitable that sports injuries occur more frequently. Patients now have many options in how to treat this damage. Dr. El-Gazzar specializes in: • Hip Arthroscopy • Elbow Arthroscopy • Joint Preservation (including meniscal & cartilage transplants and re-alignment procedures) • Sports injuries such as ACL, PCL, multi-ligamentous, and meniscus knee injuries • Shoulder Arthroscopy and Reconstruction/Arthroplasty • Ankle Arthroscopy as well as other sports injuries. He also enjoys treating and helping adults and children that have undergone orthopedic trauma and fractures

I will preface this by saying that Dr. El-Gazzar is fantastic. He's cheerful, sharp, extremely competent, and no-nonsense in a manner that isn't aggressive or cold. His receptionists and staff are very friendly and patient despite havingto deal with some exceptionally irritating patients (seriously- I don't know what's up with this clinic, but every time I go there's somebody being extremely rude to the receptionists, asking the same questions over and over again, blatantly refusing to listen to the doctor's advice or trying to argue with him because they don't want to do a treatment or want a different treatment, etc.). With this said, the wait times are HORRIBLE. Absolutely abysmal. Getting admitted to a room within a half hour is a blessing, and then the waiting game continues. On average it takes me 1.25 hours to see the doctor. I'm pretty sure the clinic just forgot that I had an appointment while I was in the waiting room at least once. The place is extraordinarily overbooked, and the aforementioned ornery patients make the wait times longer because the Doctor has to spend 20 mins trying to convince them that yes, they do have the issue that he diagnosed them with and yes, they do need the treatment he recommended. Once the doctor comes in, everything is great, but the wait times almost make it not worth it. If your injury is fairly mild or can be treated by a general doctor, or if your employer isn't tolerant towards taking a couple hours off on a weekday once in a while, you should seek care elsewhere. If you have a more severe injury and/or don't mind sitting in a waiting room for at least 30 mins in pursuit of high-quality care, I'd recommend this doctor.

I saw doctor El-Gazzar twice, and he 30-45 minutes late to the office in both times. The doctor is very pleasant, but I felt he rushed me to do surgery without carefully examining the situation.

I was a new patient and his assistant walked in and referred to me as "this" and had to be corrected by the Xray tech that I was a person and not a "this." The doctor spoke down to me andin a belittling voice asked me 3 times if I was sure I would comply with his instructions. It seems like they are used to patients who lie and aren't compliant. Either way it's poor customer service to make make broad assumptions and treat adults like small children. As I was responding to his question on where else I had discomfort he cut me off and concluded, "that's because you work out and dont stretch". Which isn't true and when I expressed that he didn't even acknowledge my response. There are multiple factors that contribute to muscle tightness which can persist despite stretching. But seems like he knows for a fact I don't stretch so it doesnt matter. Overall they made me feel like I didn't matter. I left a message with the front desk to discuss this directly with the doctor but its been 3 days and I haven't heard back.

Dr El Ghazaar is an excellent doctor. He treated my daughter when she fractured her forearm. He is very easy and open to talk with. I highly recommend him His office staff seem to care about the patients more so thanother doctors' staff I have seen. They are mature, humble, and highly professional. They always offer water while we were waiting to be seen by the doctor. It was a pleasant surprise to come across such a friendly staff. In most doctors' offices I have been, the staff seem to be highly unprofessional and immature.

Doctor El-Gazzar is thorough, professional, and recommends conservative courses of treatment, ensuring a full and thorough recovery. The only complaint is his office can tend to get very busy and wait times can suffer. But that may be the cost of a doctor that many people want to see!

While the doctor was quick to recognize what I thought was a ligament pull was likely a stress fracture, I would recommend finding another doctor. I am not sure whether it is a case of him chronically overbooking patients, but Ihad to wait at least 45 minutes to see the doctor in each of my 3 appts. And once I did see him he rushed through the visit and I left without all of my concerns addressed. Finally, on my last appt he directed me move to limited weight bearing from non-weight bearing on my crutches despite the fact swelling in the area had not yet dissipated, and set my recovery back even further. Thankfully, I am now making progress on my healing with my new doctor, who has me on a conservative regime and actually takes time to sepak with me and do a physical exam at my checkups.

My experience... I went for a knee check-up. Entrusting the doctor and medical staff, I assumed all necessary proceedings will be qualified as 'In-Network'. I was prescribed an MRI test, with the lab location circled on the prescription. Iwent for the MRI at the location indicated on the prescription. Upon receiving the medical bill months later, I realized that the MRI lab was 'Out-of-Network'. Though it is also my responsibility as a consumer to check if the locations are indeed 'In-Network', as a trusting patient I assumed this would have been prioritized by the staff. Lesson learned: Always Double-Check! On another occasion, I was not properly alerted by the staff of the arrival of a custom knee brace ordered for me. I had to reach out to inquire rather than being notified.

He is a very good doctor with good bedside manner but some of his office staff (admins) are rude. The wait time is always a problem (seems excessive to me - always 40 mins or more) and the front desk doesnot advise patients of the timing delays - they just let you sit in the waiting area over an hour without any word. If you do approach and ask about about the time issue - good luck! My advice - if you are out of work or have the time to wait - make an appointment and try him out. If you work like myself and have time constraints - look around for another doctor.

My visit was extremely fast and on point from the moment I walked into their office. A very clean and well maintained office too. I checked in with reception they were kind and friendly. I was asked to sit and waitto be called which was not even 2 minutes later. I was brought back to one of the patient rooms. I had visited Dr. El-Gazzar walked in rather qucikly to my surprise once again. He had previously gave me a referral for a MRI which I had received and was there on this visit to review the results and see what options were available to me. Dr. El-Gazzar remembered me and a was super friendly and charismatic as he was the first visit. He showed me on the computer the results of MRI and explained in detail that I have a chronic tear in my right lateral meniscus. He then showed me a model of a knee and basically showed me exactly what was going on inside my knee. My options he said were to do surgery and would heal but suggested Physical Therapy as the first option for 6-8 weeks and then if doesn't heal I can move forward with the surgery which he explained very comforting that it would be a small procedure and I would be able to move around essentially pretty quickly. I had a lot of questions and he took the time with me to answer all of them which I appreciate the thoroughness. He referred a physical therapist and I was on my way. Super efficient I love that. I look forward to the next visit with Dr. Yaser El- Gazzar!

Office is nice and clean and staff are friendly. Parkingis available out back (at Grand St. location). Did not have any issues with scheduling an appointment through ZocDoc. Received a confirmation email and also a call from the office confirming my appointment. I plan to go back again.

It seemed like no one knew what was going on in this office. i was there for over three hours. I told them the hospital said my ankle was fractured and they put a boot on it and told me towalk on it! It was a really terrible visit. They asked about the injury, then another time i had to reexplain the whole thing. They kept stating the wrong foot and I really felt unsure of the diagnosis.

This is a very busy office. A hallmark of an excellent practitioner. As a result, Dr. El-Gazzar and his team are very efficient. Check-in and check-out is simple and includes the usual paperwork. The office is neat and tidy although reminiscentof a hospital. The staff appears to be caring. As a clinician, Dr. El-Gazzar is professional, knowledgable, and informative. He has excellent bedside manner and his nurses appear to as well. He is clearly very busy so he bypasses small talk (something I appreciate). Nevertheless, his assessment felt thorough and his explanation of my course of treatment was easy to understand. I would recommend Dr. El-Gazzar without reservation!

In my first visit i had to wait for at least 3 hours from the appointment time i received. I booked the appointment online viz ZocDoc and while booking my second appointment via doctor's office i got to know that informationon ZocDoc is probably not fully updated and i should not book an appointment from there. May be that's why the wait time of 3 hrs. Although, i must tell you the real reason for writing this review, when i called to book my second appointment, after a long discussion i got an appointment with my Dr. Yaser's associate, which is alright looking at the less severity of my case, but when i reached next day according to my appointment at the facility it was booked for i was told that my appointment is some other day at some other time at some other facility. I was totally shocked and then the woman at the window asked me to come later the same day again. To which i said "I am sorry, after such a blunder on appointment by front desk i do not trust them anymore and can't waste my time booking any more appointments at this facility with anyone" So i am not going back. But i do want to mention that this should not affect my appreciation for Dr. Yaser himself, he was very very good , he first of all apologized for making me wait so much, smiling all the way during the diagnosis, comfortable to answer all my questions however stupid they were, gave full attention and time as much i needed to understand the process of getting a brace, physiotherapy or MRI and their sequences which was difficult to digest all at the moment. So 5 stars to Doctor but 0 to his front desk administration, coz of them i lost a good doctor.

It took a long time, but they were thorough. They sent me for tests also, which took time and it would have been good to know that in advance because if I hadn't had time to stay then the visit wouldhave been a bust. Very convenient, actually, to have an imaging place right in the building and they were very responsive also. Dr. Morales, who was subbing in for Dr. El-Gazzar, was very personable and finally gave me an answer and a solution to a vexing medical problem after I had looked for answers elsewhere. I finally know what kind of doctor to see now for my issue.
