Getting to know Dr. Zola Chihombori Quao

Hello! I’m Dr. Zola Chihombori Quao. I view well-being as something far deeper than simply not being sick—it’s the ability to flourish emotionally, mentally, and physically. I completed my medical degree at the Yale School of Medicine and my psychiatry and family medicine residencies concurrently at the University of California, Davis. With board certification in both Psychiatry and Family Medicine, I’m able to care for the full spectrum of health needs, integrating medical expertise with a strong focus on lifestyle and preventive care. My goal is to support lasting, meaningful change—whether that involves medication, lifestyle shifts, therapy, or a combination of approaches. Many people come to me for help with mental health concerns as well as weight management, diabetes, cardiovascular risk, and other lifestyle-related conditions. I rely on compassionate, individualized care and evidence-based strategies rooted in the science of behavior change. Together, we build a plan that aligns with your values, your lived experiences, and your long-term goals. Patients often experience significant improvements over time: a 50–60% reduction in depression and anxiety within four months, better sleep by 30–40%, 5–14% weight loss over six months, and an average 10 mmHg drop in systolic blood pressure. These outcomes reflect the power of a whole-person, integrated approach—and the meaningful progress that’s possible when care is truly collaborative.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I approach health and wellness by looking at the whole person, understanding that genuine well-being grows from the connection between mind, body, and daily life. Medication can play an important role, but it’s only one option among many. I focus on lifestyle foundations—nutrition, movement, relationships, sleep, and habits—because these elements shape both our challenges and our capacity to heal. By addressing underlying causes and considering each person’s physical, emotional, and social context, I work to help individuals create meaningful, lasting changes. My style is collaborative, supportive, and tailored to your personal goals and circumstances. I do not complete disability paperwork during an initial visit, as I believe it’s essential to fully understand your needs and create a thoughtful treatment plan before recommending time away from work. This ensures that any leave is used in a way that truly supports recovery. Our practice is committed to professionalism, respect, and clear communication. While we understand that unexpected situations arise, we ask for at least 24 hours’ notice when canceling an appointment. Visits canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice—or appointments that are missed entirely—will incur an $80 no-show fee. This policy helps us honor the time of our clinicians and the patients waiting for care. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When I meet with patients, I start by getting a full picture of the many influences that shape their health. During the initial visit, we explore family and medical history, early life experiences, relationships, nutrition, movement, work, and daily habits to understand the broader context of their well-being. Together, we decide on treatment options that align with their goals and preferences, creating a plan that feels both personalized and practical. While I provide certain therapeutic modalities myself, I also collaborate with an experienced team of therapists, health coaches, registered dietitians, and strength and conditioning specialists. This coordinated approach helps us support the physical, emotional, and lifestyle elements that contribute to meaningful and lasting improvements.
