Who are ENTs?

Being able to talk and sing, listen and appreciate the world of sounds, smell the myriad of scents around, and sleep peacefully next to your loved ones are simple luxuries of life that make it rich and meaningful. Most of us take these blessings for granted, but we realize their importance only when one of these functions is at risk.

The doctors who specialize in treating disorders in the ear, nose, throat, head, and neck region are called ENT specialists. They are also known as otolaryngologists. When referred to an Otolaryngologist, they care for conditions ranging from simple to severe.

Becoming an ENT

To be a certified otolaryngologist, an individual must complete graduate college with a science medical school degree and at least five years of specialty training and follow up by clearing the American Board of Otolaryngology examination. Several ENT specialists venture further into a subspecialty and pursue a one- or two-year fellowship.

ENT subspecialties

Subspecialties within ear, nose, and throat care encompass a wide range of specialized treatments, each dedicated to addressing specific health issues in these areas with careful and personalized care:

  1. Allergy specialists: Otolaryngologists can specialize in treating environmental allergies, such as pollen or pet dander. They utilize medications or allergy shots to address allergies and are instrumental in identifying and managing food allergies for comprehensive care.
  2. Facial and reconstructive surgery experts: Some practitioners in otolaryngology focus on facial and reconstructive surgery. This involves not only cosmetic procedures like facelifts and nose jobs but also extends to helping individuals whose facial features have been altered due to accidents or congenital issues, aiming to restore both form and function.
  3. Head and neck specialists: Otolaryngologists specializing in head and neck concerns are crucial for individuals dealing with tumors in the nose, sinuses, mouth, throat, voice box, or upper esophagus. Their expertise allows for a comprehensive approach, encompassing diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care.
  4. Laryngologists: Laryngology specialists focus on diseases and injuries affecting the voice box (larynx) and vocal cords. In addition to addressing voice-related issues, they are skilled in diagnosing and treating swallowing problems providing holistic care for throat health.
  5. Otology and neurotology practitioners: Specialists in otology and neurotology are dedicated to resolving issues related to the ears and engage in their field with expertise and commitment. From infections and hearing loss to dizziness and tinnitus, these experts bring a nuanced understanding of various auditory conditions, employing tailored interventions for optimal outcomes.
  6. Pediatric ENT specialists: Specifically trained to address the unique healthcare needs of children, Pediatric ENTs use specially designed tools and exam rooms to treat youngsters. They treat common pediatric issues, including ear infections, tonsillitis, asthma, allergies, congenital disabilities in the head and neck, and speech or language problems.
  7. Rhinology experts: Otolaryngologists specializing in rhinology focus on the nose and sinuses. They treat conditions such as sinusitis, nosebleeds, loss of smell, congestion, and unusual growths, contributing significantly to overall nasal health.
  8. Sleep medicine specialists: Some ENTs specialize in sleep medicine, particularly addressing breathing-related problems like snoring or sleep apnea. Using tools such as sleep studies, they evaluate nocturnal breathing patterns, offering insights into potential breathing difficulties at night.

What do ENTs treat?

ENT specialists are not simply medical doctors who treat conditions such as swimmer's ears, sleep apnea, and sinus headaches; they are also surgeons who routinely perform intricate operations in some of the most complex regions of our bodies. Their surgical expertise ranges from restoring hearing function, removing blockages in the airways, removing tumors in the head and neck region, and rebuilding the various structures in this region.

Some conditions that ear, nose & throat doctors near you can treat include:

  1. Ear: This subspecialty is also known as otology or neurotology. ENT specialists medically and surgically treat hearing loss, chronic ear infections, tinnitus (constant ringing in the ears), balance disorders, facial and cranial nerve pain, dizziness, and outer and inner ear disorders present from birth.
  2. Nose: This subspecialty, also known as rhinology, focuses on treating conditions relating to the nose, such as allergies, nasal septum deviation, infections and inflammations such as rhinitis and sinusitis, sinus headaches and migraines, obstructions in the nose due to nasal polyps, and disorders affecting smell, skull-base tumors, and esthetic correction of the nose.
  3. Throat: ENTs can treat diseases of the larynx, soreness, and hoarseness of the throat, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), disorders that affect voice and swallowing, and tumors in the throat.
  4. Head and neck: ENT physicians train and specialize in esthetic and reconstructive surgeries in the head and neck region. This includes congenital deformities of the face, such as cleft lip and palate, deformities due to accidents and trauma, and deformities due to benign and malignant tumors. ENTs also treat thyroid disorders such as thyroid and parathyroid tumors, enlarged thyroid and parathyroid glands, Grave's disease, etc.
  5. Sleep: ENTs can treat sleep apnea caused by nasal or airway obstruction, snoring, and disrupted breathing issues. Sleep apnea can be obstructive, central, or complex. Loud snoring is a prevalent indication of sleep apnea, which can become a severe problem if not treated promptly. Further, you should disclose any sleep problems that leave you tired or irritable and seek treatment.

What are some standard procedures performed by otolaryngologists?

Otolaryngologists perform a variety of specialized procedures, including:

  1. Tonsillectomy: A surgery to remove the tonsils, often done to treat recurrent throat infections.
  2. Septoplasty: A procedure to straighten the bones and cartilage between the nostrils, commonly performed for those with a deviated septum.
  3. Myringotomy and pressure equalization tube placement: This surgery, often for children with frequent ear infections, prevents fluid buildup in the ears.
  4. Thyroid surgery: Often performed to treat thyroid cancer, this surgery involves removing the thyroid gland.
  5. Endoscopic sinus surgery: A minimally invasive surgery that uses small tubes to restore sinus function and alleviate chronic sinus issues.
  6. Facial plastic surgery includes medical and cosmetic surgeries, such as rhinoplasty (nose jobs), facelifts, and chin augmentation.
  7. Excision and biopsy: Involves the partial or complete removal of tumors for diagnosis or treatment.
  8. Tracheostomy: A procedure where a tube is placed in the trachea or windpipe to help with breathing.
  9. Blepharoplasty: A surgery that removes drooping skin from the eyelids, often for functional or cosmetic reasons.
  10. Tympanoplasty: A surgery to repair a ruptured eardrum.
  11. Neck dissection is a procedure that removes lymph nodes from the neck, typically to prevent the spread of mouth or throat cancers.
  12. Surgery for snoring/obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) involves removing soft tissue from the throat to help patients breathe more easily during sleep.
