Cleft lips and palate in California
As per a report by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), clefts in the lip and palate are the most common forms of congenital deformities in the United States. For every 100 births, the number of cleft lips with or without cleft palate is 1.2. For cleft palates alone, the number is 0.56 for every 1000 babies born.
The rate of Incidence of these orofacial defects is 0.54 for every 1000 African American babies, whereas the same number for white babies born is much higher at 1.70.
In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, "Incidence of oral clefts among different ethnicities in California," 8,043,393 live births were recorded and analyzed for orofacial clefts. The population studied included White or non-Hispanic, Hispanic, Asian or Pacific Islanders, African Americans, and Native Americans. The results showed varied incidence rates for oral clefts across different ethnicities, but the highest numbers were found in the White or non-Hispanic population.
