"I have had the condition for which I was seen today for over 10 years; I have seen no fewer than half a dozen physicians of different specialties for treatment and the answer has always been the same - suffer with the pain and schedule surgery. Today when I met with Dr. Kennedy, she did not give me that directive. She did not simply review my films, rush me in, and rush me out. She spent nearly an hour with me in the office talking and listening - helping me to better understand the condition I have and the possible treatments. She did not discount my experience as a patient, did not assume a dominant or specialist role in the relationship, and valued my input a great deal. In more than ten years, this is the only physician who offered me an alternative. Instead of surgery for the condition, Dr. Kennedy recognized that there is a very real possibility that the pain I experience is not the result of the condition, directly, but rather a result of arthritic changes in the ankle joint. Instead of immediately recommending surgery, Dr. Kennedy suggested a series of injections. I expressed concern about potential side effects and impact on the timing of surgery if the injections do not work. Dr. Kennedy helped me to establish a timeline for treatment so that I could see that this would not delay my desired surgery date if the injections do not work. We discussed her opinion regarding surgery, as well. There are several options - she suggested the least invasive of the three. Again, I expressed concern about the potential benefit of the surgery and the impact it would have with regard to delaying the surgery I have always been told would be my best bet. Again, Dr. Kennedy helped me to see that if the injections are not helpful and the first surgery is unsuccessful, it would probably only delay the second surgery by about a month. I chose her office because it is convenient to me; it is located in the same building as my PCP - about five minutes from my home. I was also happy that she offered online scheduling, because I am often on the phone for work and it can be difficult for me to be available if I have to wait for a return call from office staff. I chose Dr. Kennedy because of convenience, but I will continue to see her because of her chair-side manner, her collaborative approach to treatment, and her dedication to finding the least invasive procedure with the greatest outcome. It isn't often that I make such a bold recommendation, but if you need to see somebody for a foot or ankle concern, I very strongly encourage you to consider making an appointment with Dr. Kennedy."
