IUD Insertion

An IUD/intrauterine device is a small, plastic, T-shaped device that is placed into the uterus by a trained professional, as a form of birth control. An IUD is a long-term, yet reversible, form of contraception, which means that you can have it removed anytime you want. In simple terms, an IUD helps prevent the sperm from fertilizing the egg. IUDs are one of the most functional forms of reversible contraception and can last between five and 10 years. Insertion of an IUD can take place at any time during the menstruation cycle, given the woman is not pregnant.

Typically, there are two types of IUDs: copper IUDs and hormonal IUDs. The copper IUD is wrapped in copper, creating a hostile environment for the sperm by affecting its mobility. The hormone-releasing IUD administers the hormone progestin, which also creates a barrier to sperm penetration. According to the Planned Parenthood website, copper IUDs are the most effective form of emergency contraception available. You can get it within five days of having unprotected sex, and it is 99.9% effective at preventing pregnancy.

The insertion procedure

A nurse or doctor can insert an intrauterine device. The procedure goes as follows:

  • When you go to the doctor’s office for an IUD insertion, first the doctor will ask you some questions about your medical history.
  • Then the doctor will perform a thorough pelvic exam to check for STDs and other infections. This is to ensure that you’re free of any infections that could worsen with the IUD being placed.
  • The doctor may conduct an ultrasound if he or she deems necessary.
  • Before the insertion, the doctor may give you medication to help open your cervix.
  • During the insertion, the provider uses a speculum to open your vaginal walls and insert the device into your uterus.
  • Generally, the process takes around five minutes, and it is common to feel slight discomfort and cramping during the insertion. Talk to your doctor about your pain medication options.

Frequently asked questions

What are the benefits of an IUD?

  • An IUD is a long-term solution, compared to other forms of birth control.
  • An IUD is very effective. You will never forget to use it, which makes it a reliable type of contraception against unwanted pregnancy.
  • It does not affect your fertility. In fact, it is possible to get pregnant right after getting the IUD removed.
  • There are no hormonal side effects with the copper IUD.

What are some quick tips to help me with an IUD insertion?

  • Discuss your contraception history with your healthcare practitioner.
  • Write down any questions you may have in advance, so you don’t forget to ask them.
  • Feel free to talk about the side effects and benefits of IUDs.
  • Talk about the contraindications to IUD insertion.
  • Check to see if your insurance provider covers the practitioner and the IUD insertion.

IUD vs. birth control implants

  • While an IUD is inserted in the uterus, an implant is inserted into the upper arm.
  • An IUD can last up to 12 years, while an implant can last up to five years.
  • Removal of an IUD is hassle-free, compared to that of an implant.

You can read about other birth control options on the Planned Parenthood website.
