Vertigo

Vertigo is a sensation of dizziness or feeling of being off-balance. It is associated with inner ear problems and can be categorized as a symptom rather than a condition. Common symptoms related to vertigo include balance issues, headaches, motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, abnormal eye movements and ringing in the ear. Symptoms are usually recurring and may last from a few minutes to a few hours.

The treatment depends on the underlying condition that’s causing vertigo. Often, it heals without any treatment, as the brain can adjust to the changes in the inner ear, but in some cases, physical therapy is required to aid the vestibular system, which sends signals to the brain about head and body movements relative to gravity. Medication might assist in relieving the patient of the symptoms of vertigo. If vertigo is a result of a tumor or brain injury, then surgery may be recommended by your physician.

Causes of vertigo

Vertigo is a result of the imbalance in the inner ear. However, there can be other causes, too. Certain head triggers can also cause vertigo that could be recurrent.  Migraines can trigger vertigo too. Inflammation of the nerve connecting the brain and inner ear could result in dizziness and nausea, which in turn could trigger vertigo. Similarly, Ménière's disease can lead to loss of hearing eventually causing vertigo. You might also experience additional symptoms,  like high temperature, tinnitus or hearing loss, based on the underlying condition.

Vertigo treatment

Some cases improve over time and do not require treatment. However, people suffering from Ménière's disease might experience recurring episodes of vertigo. Simple head movements known as the Epley maneuver can be used to treat benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Antihistamines and prochlorperazine can also help in early stages of most cases. Vestibular rehabilitation, a series of exercises for people with dizziness and balance problems, can assist people with vertigo. You can read more about treating vertigo on Scotland’s NHS website.
