Getting to know Dr. Arthur Heiserman

I have over 25 years of experience working with adults, children, adolescents, and couples on various emotional issues and life challenges, helping them recognize their needs and strengths and discover opportunities for new and different experiences. In coming to see me you can expect to receive highly personalized care tailored to your particular needs and goals. In my many years of practicing and teaching psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, time and time again I have found that being closely listened to, understood, and creatively thought about by someone fully open to your experience will enhance your ability to think more freely, to feel your experiences more fully, and to deepen your understandings of yourself and others. I draw on a broad body of knowledge – within psychology and psychoanalysis and across disciplines – to understand you compassionately, and carefully consider the wider communities in which you live and work. I will focus on locating your inner strengths and resources to enhance your self-confidence and self-esteem. I believe there is a universal urge to discover truth and to realize, or reclaim, untapped inner parts of ourselves. I will work with you to clear obstacles that have been holding you back from living a fuller, more meaningful, and gratifying life. When working well this process of change involves moments of uncertainty, discovery, playfulness, creativity, and surprise. I earned my Ph.D in clinical psychology from Columbia University where I've been an Adjunct Professor for 20 years. In addition, I have a certificate in Psychoanalysis from New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, a certificate in Somatic Experiencing psychotherapy from the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, and certificates in Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) from Journey Clinical and Fluence International. If you are curious to learn about Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) I will be glad to explore this option with

What should a new client know about working with you?

In coming to see me you can expect to receive highly personalized care tailored to your particular needs and interests. In my many years of practicing and teaching psychotherapy and psychoanalysis, time and time again I have found that being closely listened to, understood, and creatively thought about by someone fully open to your experience will enhance your ability to think freely, to feel your experiences more fully, and to deepen your understanding of yourself and others. I draw on a broad body of knowledge – within psychology and psychoanalysis and across disciplines – to understand you compassionately, and carefully take into account the broader communities in which you live and work. I will focus on locating your inner strengths and resources to enhance your self-confidence and self-esteem. I believe there is a universal urge to discover the truth and to realize, or reclaim, untapped inner parts of ourselves. I will work with you to clear obstacles that have been holding you back from living a fuller, more meaningful, and gratifying life

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Individual psychotherapy involves entering into a confidential, open, and honest dialogue in which you can take a close look at your life, your past, your current circumstances, and your decisions. In the process, you can find out more about who you are and bring into focus how you can more freely imagine, explore, and then pursue your particular interests and dreams. Over the years I have seen a considerable benefit in focusing on what is felt within the therapeutic relationship as a valuable source of understanding limitations and discovering possibilities for change. I pay careful attention to and collaboratively explore, the subtleties and intricacies of personal and interpersonal experiences as they unfold in the moment. In a creative and sometimes playful manner, we will begin to imagine and explore new ways of seeing ourselves, open up new ways of relating to others, and in the process overcome negative expectations. The goal is to liberate you from unsatisfying or painful patterns in your personal or work life and move you toward becoming who you would most like to become.

In-network insurances

Dr. Arthur Heiserman is not in-network with any insurances

It’s common for mental health providers to be out-of-network. Many insurance plans offer out-of-network coverage, so you may get partially reimbursed. Learn more

Out-of-pocket fees and assistance
Initial session: $350 for 75 minutes
Ongoing session: $275 for 45 minutes
  • Sliding scale: Offers lower out-of-pocket fees on an individual basis, typically based on your ability to pay
  • Files your insurance claim: You pay the session fee upfront and the provider files the claim for you, so you can get reimbursed directly without worrying about the paperwork

More information on payments and coverage

• Most insurance provide at least partial coverage – and in some instances full coverage for services with Licensed Psychologists who are out of network. I will be available to help you with paperwork and claim submission if need be. It is advisable to contact your insurer to find out what ‘out-of-network’ benefits you have. When you call your insurer, ask whether you have a ‘deductible’ for out-of-network mental health services and if so, what that amount is. Then ask what percentage of the fee your policy covers and whether that percentage changes as your yearly out-of-pocket expenditure increases. Some insurance policies have an annual ‘out-of-pocket’ maximum expenditure after which the policy covers a higher percentage of the per-session fee or the entire fee. All of the information that you share is treated with the utmost care and respect for your privacy and the law protects the relationship between patient and doctor such that information cannot be disclosed without your written permission. You should be aware, however, that there are some exceptions, and if any of the unusual situations apply, I am required by law to make a report to the appropriate persons or authorities. I will not make any such reports without first informing you that I will be doing so.

I have been seeing Dr. Heiserman for about a year. To say that I am a much more adjusted person i.e. able to deal with the daily ups and downs of daily living would be a understatement. The thing that impresses me the most about Dr. Heiserman is his ability to pay close attention to the things I am not saying verbally. This is the trait that separates him from the therapist I had been seeing for the previous 8 years. I think I stayed with my previous therapist because he told me what I wanted to hear not necessarily what I needed. Dr. Heiserman lets me know what I need and what I must do. In Dr. Heiserman I have a great therapist who I highly recommend, ten fold! What a impact he has made on my life and daily living.

I have been seeing Dr. Heiserman for almost a year now and looking back, I can see how far I've come. I'm often surprised by what we end up talking about, but I'm thinking about things I never have before, and overall my life is making more sense. He's a smart and thoughtful, and unlike the psychologist I saw before, he lets me know what he is thinking. I recommend him highly.
Dr. Heiserman came highly recommended and I must say that he exceeded expectations. He was completely present and really seemed to get so much from just one meeting. It felt good to be taken seriously and a lot came together. Odd, but I think that is was the first time I really heard and believed whats been going on inside my head. I feel clearer and calmer. Thank you Dr. H. There is a lot more and, after sleeping on it, I'm schedueling another appointment now.

Dr Heiserman is an incredibly supportive and responsive professional. He is very skilled at helping others follow and find their true purpose.
I have seen several psychologists over the years, for longer or shorter periods of time, before meeting with Dr. Heiserman, and I must say that he stands head and shoulders above the rest. He is clearly very experienced and knowledgeable, and combined with his very careful listening and surprising insight, I have found him to be not only really understanding, but also very helpful. I feel grateful, and want to share because I know how nerve racking it can be to find a doctor who is really good when it comes to sensitive personal matters. Victor Shoichet

Dr. Heiserman is a very kind, empathetic person. I left feeling relieved and much better. He made me feel very comfortable which allowed me to really open up. He is definitely the person to see if you are shy, or have difficulty opening up.

He is great! Really, really GREAT!
Dr. Heiserman was kind and caring and definitely listened well, but if you're looking for advice he may not be the right person for you.
Went to see Dr. Heiserman two times before deciding not to return. Was unimpressed with both his ability to understand what I was saying and how it was distressing to me, and how he was unable to offer helpful tools and strategies in handling the situations I had presented. To be perfectly honest, there were too many "awkward silences" during the session and I'm a very talkative person!
Dr. Heiserman is warm, experienced and uncannily insightful. I left feeling seen and heard --and optimistic about getting a new vantage on my situation.
Dr. Heiserman is extremely professional and sensitive to a patient's need to explore their own thoughts and feelings. He takes great care and concern in treating his patients and is very adept at guiding them through even the most complex emotional journey.
