Carissa grew up as an athlete playing basketball and volleyball. During her junior year of high school she injured her wrist while playing volleyball and required Occupational Therapy (OT). She became interested in the field of OT at this time, and began volunteering at her local hospital's Child Development Center to learn more about the profession. This experience solidified Carissa's interest in OT as she saw the impact that the profession had on other's abilities to participate in their valued daily activities and occupations. Carissa attended Sacred Heart University (SHU) for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. While at SHU, Carissa was involved in the Women's Club Volleyball Team, Student Ambassador program, Residential Life, Chi Omega Sorority, Pi Theta Epsilon OT Honor Society, Coalition of OT Advocates for Diversity, and was a Graduate Assistant as well as President of the Student Occupational Therapy Association. Her Level II Fieldwork rotation in outpatient hand therapy contributed to Carissa's passion for a professional focus on hand/upper extremity therapy. Hands are used to express, communicate, and do the things we need and love to do. Carissa has aspirations to become a CHT and continue to positively impact the lives of others within the hand/upper extremity field. In her free time, Carissa enjoys running/exercising, reading, and traveling.
