Dr. Carla Sterling, PsyD

Psychologist
MD
Hi there, I'm Carla! Hello, I'm Dr. Carla Sterling, and I'm a licensed clinical psychologist (Psy.D.) with a degree from Regent University. I'm currently licensed in Maryland and the District of Columbia and have worked with individuals, families, groups, and couples. I use an integrative approach to therapy, and my primary areas of focus include trauma and other stress-related disorders; mood and anxiety disorders; grief; serious mental illness/thought disorders; and health promotion and disease prevention. I also provide psychodiagnostic testing that helps with diagnostic clarification and treatment recommendations. My approach My theoretical approach to therapy is best described as integrative. My philosophy of care is rooted in the belief that it's essential to understand and consider multiple dimensions of the whole person-including physical/physiological/biological, mental, emotional, social/relational, and spiritual variables. I work with clients to understand which of these variables are most salient for them in understanding presenting problems and identifying the most effective treatment approaches. I view my role in therapy as a conduit of healing to facilitate and promote overall mental, emotional, psychological, physical, and spiritual wellbeing, and in so doing, empower clients to maximize their full potential. I believe that healing occurs within the context of relationships and value the importance of early childhood influences in shaping who we are as adults. As such, I rely heavily on psychodynamic and humanistic/relational principles to better understand those early childhood influences and to foster the right treatment conditions that promote empathic attunement with clients, increased insight and awareness, and collaborative problem-solving. I integrate CBT, DBT, and Solution-Focused approaches during treatment planning to identify specific, measurable treatment goals.
