Getting to know Dr. George Kingsley

Good psychotherapy provides relief from discomfort and pain, as well as emotional growth and lasting psychological change. For 30 years, I've been helping patients address and process the most difficult problems of living-from depression, anxiety, and addictions to feelings of inadequacy, challenges in regulating emotional states, and the stresses of traumatic experiences (just to name a few). I hold a PhD and a Master's in Clinical Psychology from Adelphi University, a Master's in Social Work from Marywood University and a Bachelor's degree from Temple University. I also completed a Postgraduate Certification in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy at the Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University. This diverse educational background informs my approach and deepens my understanding of the complexities my patients face. In our work, we will begin with a focus on whatever brings you to treatment. Over time, we'll gain an understanding of what contributes to your struggles and address them in a way that leads not only to feeling better but also toward building the internal resources needed to move forward with greater strength and resilience that endures long after treatment has ended. You will gain more than just relief (which of course is paramount); you'll develop a deeper understanding of yourself. Our work will ultimately allow you to love, work, and experience joy-the pillars of a well-lived life-in whatever ways you define those.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a psychoanalyst, I provide a collaborative, thoughtful approach to treating depression, anxiety and relationship difficulties. Together we will explore the patterns that shape your emotional well-being and relationships in order to help you reach your treatment goals and promote psychological healing and growth. I also teach in the Postgraduate Program at the Derner School of Psychology at Adelphi University, and supervise doctoral and psychoanalytic candidates, bringing extensive clinical expertise to my work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Treatment begins with developing a clear understanding of your concerns, personal history, relationships and goals. Through our sessions, we explore recurring patterns in thoughts, feelings and relationships that may contribute to depression, anxiety, interpersonal problems and other difficulties. The therapeutic relationship itself also becomes an important source of insight and growth, helping to identify longstanding ways of relating to oneself and others. Over time, this deeper understanding can lead to greater emotional resilience, more satisfying relationships and a stronger sense of self. Treatment is tailored to each individual and proceeds at a pace that feels thoughtful, collaborative and respectful.
